Unfortunate lack of judgment or just a simple request for customers to play by the rules? In a recent Lone Star dress-code kerfuffle, a hostess at Dallas's
Five SIxty, a Wolfgang Puck restaurant located at the top of Reunion Tower, turned away
six World War II veterans for violating the "business casual" dress code. The veterans -- who were in their 80s and 90s -- were wearing unit baseball caps, POW T-shirts and shorts. "We weren't dressed like hoboes," 93-year-old Jay Coberly told the
Dallas Morning News. "We were just dressed comfortably."
The veterans' family members say they tried to get the hostess to relent. "Do you realize these veterans fought for your freedom and your way of life and you can't see your way clear to let them up to get a view of the city?" Michelle Northrop, Coberly's daughter, explained. But according to Ms. Northrop, the hostess remained politely resolute.
The manager of Five Sixty, Marcus Cascio, has worked hard to make it right with the vets, apologizing in writing (and sending along a couple bottles of scotch). This particular group of guys has been through far worse than this, though -- they survived
Black Thursday, one of the worst battles of World War II, fought in German air space in 1943. Perhaps as a result, the vets approached this situation with their collective sense of humor intact. "We've been all over the country," Coberly said, referring to his unit's regular get-togethers. "We've never had this kind of problem. Dallas must be a first-class town."

10-16-2010 @3:29PM randi said... The hostess was just doing her job, as trained. Since when don't the rules apply just because you're a vet? There are a lot of vets out there, do they not have to follow policy/rules as well? Or is it just a certain group of vets? And which policies are they allowed to break? A few, all, only those that apply to restaurants?

and come back. It would be my honor to serve WW II vets....Alfred-

10-16-2010 @5:08PM Martha Brideau said... my father was also a wwII vet. He would tell you that the rules apply to everyone. No special treatment for doing your duty. How do you know that some of the homeless or other inappropriately dressed people that didn't go in aren't veterans. Being veterans, they should know what a proper dress is. You shouldn't try to get someone fired or a business boycotted because you didn't follow the rules. I am proud of the service my father gave for his country, and these soldiers should be ashamed of themselves.

Guaranteed to win!
May have been worth fighting for this country once. Not anymore, Especially if white and male.

Our grandparents wouldnt have even thought to go to the movies without a coat and tie on. My grandfather wouldnt leave the house without a hat. These are the very ones who sneered at us and called us hippies 60s/70s. Whats good for the goose is good for the gander.

10-16-2010 @11:21PM Leila said... Okay, I would not side with the vets on this one unless they had specifically called ahead and got approval for the deviation from dress code. My fiance is a vet and many in my family are veterans as well. Being a vet and demanding privileges is just egotistical. While veterans should get benefits from the army, I've had several demand discounts from my previous employer. My (veteran) GM, who also never demanded discounts, would of course tell them no because it was against corporate policy. If an establishment is gracious enough to give discounts or allowances to vets, all the better, but try to have a little dignity and not demand it. This article also leaves out the fact that the veterans laughed it off while their families are the ones that complained.

I for one don't need to see 80 and 90 year-olds in shorts while I'm having a expensive dinner. For those of you who swear you'll never go to a Wolfgang Puck retaurant, get real, you probably never have. As for those morons who think the hostess should be fired for doing her job, you obviously don't have a job.
I grew up with WWII vets, my father and uncles all served. It would never occur to them that their service allowed them to do whatever they damn well please. If a restaurant, or anything else, has a dress code you're expected to respec it. Maybe if they were going out to dinner they should have dressed like it.

Never should have men who gave so much for us to have these freedom ever be subjected to this type of treatment especially in the dawning years of their lives! They sacrificed, marched, fought, lived in foxholes, ate meager can goods and even starved for us. They darn well deserve to be able to get a meal in some hoity, toity resturant in their cute boy clothes while traveling in hot Texas. They should have immediately been offered some type of complimentary gift and service as soon as they walked in! I guess the hostess would have been falling over for some so call celeb no matter what they had on. So many people don't really know enough history of this country to respect it or the seniors. The hostess seemed really full of herself as well. She should have known this was a time to consult higher management, If she knew any history of America or her country she would have known these men were definitely directly responsible for her employment. Her boss, Wolfgang Puck was born in Austria in 1949 only 4 yrs after the end of WWII. In WWII, Austria and Czechoslavakia were first two countries taken over by Germany. Initially the Austrians by force or will fought with Germany. The efforts of America turned the tide and Austria turned from Germany. Only with the freedom earned by these men and their comrades could Wolfgang immigrate here and achieve such success. He couldn't do it in Austria. Wolfgang Puck would be eating Nazi hardtack and commiting terror against humanity if not for these guys, So would we.. Why isn't this a major news story instead of how drunk some celeb got or how many women showed up for a man working in a gold mine to make another country rich and we had to save them. This should be our human interest story on Today and GMA. This story should be more widespread so people know how to treat our seniors and vets. I would have loved to see a pic of the cool dudes proudly sporting their attire and in good enough shape to get around well enough to go look over the top of the city. I also bet the can really strike up the sharp suit style when it is more convenient for them to get dressed. All those WWII guys were so dreamy, handsome and fit. Its no wonder we had a baby boom fom them. If their family reads this, give all the guys lol and a big kiss for me and my family. Tell them evermost thanks for the freedom and I plan to share their story of WWII with my young grandchildren at Thanksgiving. They are now part of my family tradition. Kisses Kisses
