All the research Demian and I have poured into libation love here at Casa Cóctel has led to the launch of our own Casa blog, as well as two monthly newsletters -- one devoted to cocktails and one to whiskey. Follow our boozy blatherings by joining the email list on our website.
Yet as one thing begins, another comes to a close. This is my last post for the LeNell It All column. I've had a blast writing for Slashfood for the past year, and I'll still post news from the cocktail world front from time to time. For now, though, in the belief that there's truly a drink for every occasion, I leave you with some fun farewell cocktails.
FARE THEE WELL
First, we turn to the Ladies Home Companion, by Crosby Gaige, for a Martini variation that's a winner.
2/3 part gin
1/3 part dry vermouth
2 dashes sweet vermouth
6 dashes Curaçao or triple sec
Shake well with ice and strain into cocktail glass.
ADIOS MF
Sure, it's a rude name for a take on a Long Island Iced Tea. But don't be sore at me; it's a pretty common drink in the naughty set of cocktails. And talk about working blue -- this drink has it all going on.
1/2 ounces vodka
1/2 ounces rum
1/2 ounces tequila
1/2 ounces gin
1 splash of blue Curaçao
2 ounces sour mix*
2 ounces 7-Up or ginger ale
1 cherry, garnish
1 lemon wedge, garnish
Pour everything except the soda into an ice-filled pint glass. Top with soda. Garnish with cherry and lemon.
*You can make your own from equal parts simple syrup and fresh squeezed lemon juice.
JAMAICA FAREWELL
Created by Daniel Reichert, a bartender who was inspired by memories of his father's Bay Rum cologne, this drink features not only Jamaican rum but also the flavor of pimento (allspice), a berry wildly popular in Jamaica. Haus Alpenz is one of the few companies distributing Pimento Dram, a spicy liqueur with a rum base. If you can't find it in your neck of the woods, try making your own with pal Chuck Taggart's recipe.
2 ounces Appleton Estate rum
3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
3/4 ounce apricot brandy
2 dashes Angostura bitters
1 teaspoon pimento liqueur
1 lime wedge, garnish
Pour all the booze into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with lime wedge.
