KFC Serves Up Reusable Containers

KFC has gotten a lot of press lately thanks to its hugely hyped Double Down, a sandwich that strikes some as the epitome of American excess. The company's latest offering, however, takes a step toward balancing that image: reusable packaging. Already in place in five markets around the U.S., the 100% propylene containers are replacing the styrofoam boxes KFC has been using for side orders, such as mashed potatoes, green beans, and coleslaw.

KFC is calling it their best packaging idea since their iconic bucket, and others agree -- notably the folks at Greener Package (GP), an organization devoted to sustainable packaging, who awarded KFC a 2010 Greener Package Award.
According to GP, the new container requires 25 percent less energy to produce than the old polystyrene, and generates 50 percent fewer greenhouse gases. And because the container is both microwave- and dishwasher-safe, consumers really can reuse it. Company research shows that so far, about two-thirds of customers keep the containers for at least six weeks.

KFC has other new packaging ideas in store, with the goal to limit the use of nonrenewable resources and to eliminate foam packaging from its restaurants entirely. By the end of this year, KFC "will reduce foam packaging use by 62 percent and reduce total plastic use by 17 percent," Megan Isaac, Senior Marketing Manager for KFC, told MarketWatch. GP holds up KFC, along with the other companies who won the award, as role models for their competition. "[These containers] can be considered examples of packages and best practices that the rest of the industry can learn from," GP says.

As for KFC, all the positive press is spurring them to recast the 3 R's as Renew, Reuse, and Rejoice.

The recycle number on the bottom of the container will tell you if you can put hot items in it and that same number lets you know if it can be used in the microwave.

I know that fast food animals are abused and worse, and if you decide to stop eating at once establishment, than really you should stop eating at any of them. But after seeing the videos at KFC of chickens being stepped on, thrown & broken, having their beaks torn off and of course, all the fluffy little males chicks being thrown into the shredders alive.. I simply cannot stomach that place any more.

Steve

10-01-2010 @8:58AM Steve said... The stories about rats getting cooked at KFCs are, although not completey, largely urban legends. Add to that the fact that every restaurant on Earth is as susceptible to the same kinds of contaminations that KFC is, and you find that using that as an attack on KFC is weak and obviously comes from an unprepared mind.

You would have more customers coming back and maybe keep them longer because they are not dying so fast from high blood pressure and hearth disease. Just something to think about!

For dine in they could have saved money by just giving me a throw-away plate since I was going to throw away the box. I took the containers home just to see how they would hold up in the dish washer. (not so good). Also, several people came in after me and they received the same reusable containers. When they left everything went into the trash. So much for savings. The reusable containers are a good idea, but they should restrict it to people who are actually ordering a to-go meal as they are more likely to save the containers for future use.

They've gotten so ridiculously expensive, I won't even bother going any more. $23 for 10 pieces of chicken that includes a minimum of 2 wings which are basically useless is over the top for me. I could sit in a nice restaurant, be served and not have to clean up the mess for a helluva lot less than that!
