The votes are in -- and Chiquita Banana unveiled the 18 winners in its sticker design contest.

The beloved banana company asked customers to help them redesign the iconic Chiquita banana sticker in a contest in June, Slashfood reported.

Fans submitted more than 100,000 votes for the 50 design finalists and the top 18 will adorn Chiquita bananas in stores across the country.

"I eat bananas every day before I sit down to work at my computer. Basically, bananas plus a graphic design contest equals magic," said Max I., a winner from Chico, Ca., on the Chiquita site. His design, a stylized cat with a star, got more than 3,000 votes.

Winners run the gamut -- from stickers showing a banana inside a rib cage to robots to elaborate cats.

"For nearly 50 years the familiar blue sticker has adorned Chiquita bananas," said Tanios Viviani, Chiquita president, global innovation and emerging markets and chief marketing officer, in a statement. "Now consumers and fans alike are a part of the Chiquita story by helping design and vote for stickers that join the symbol of our company."

Contest rules said that design entries couldn't make any "Inclusion or reference to Miss Chiquita" or have any writing or material Chiquita could find "inappropriate, indecent, obscene, hateful, tortuous, defamatory, slanderous or libelous."

The new sticker designs will adorn bananas in November.

None of them are good emblems for a major company. I would never look at any of them and think Chiquita and most of them don't even make me think Banana! Who judges these things?

Numbers 3, 9, and 10 are kinda boring but better than the rest of the odd choices. What does a banana have to do with a fingerprint, the moon, soundwaves, or muscles? The rest (1 and 8) look like stickers for downmarket bananas. Does anyone there have branding sense?

Ugh

10-01-2010 @1:04PM Ugh said... Are you really so dumb that you don't understand that the banana behind the ribcage is supposed to be a heart?

Number 3 is clearly the best.

10-01-2010 @2:33PM Liz said... Skeletons do not have hearts. Or hearts that resemble bananas for that matter. The concept might have worked with the outline of a live body and maybe an apple or other fruit that vaguely resembles a heart. Either way, it doesn't matter. Pictures of skeletons, skull and bones, etc. are big branding no-nos when it comes to marketing food. The message is death and poison.

On that note, I love all the designs that didn't make it to the top ten??? But I picked the houndstooth.

I think the zipper is the most creative and most well done but they aren't giving me a chance to vote on that one. Silly incomplete article.

They've changed their stickers at least twice in the past year; why not enlist their customers' help for a third campaign? It's a great way to advertise, and also encourages people to eat more bananas. I really like all the designs, especially number 3.
