Vegans Cheer Denny's New Burger

Meat, meat, and more meat! That seems to have been the mantra of late at most restaurant chains (e.g., KFC's Double Down, Carl's Jr.'s Footlong Cheeseburger, Burger King's NY Pizza Burger, etc.). It's been a boon for carnivores, but if you're a vegan, well, how about another helping of quinoa?

It's no surprise, then, that vegan blogs have been lighting up like Christmas trees with the news that Denny's (home of the Bacon Slamburger) is now serving a bona fide vegan burger.
"That's really cool!" one poster writes on VegNews. "While I VERY rarely eat out, sometimes it's unavoidable and I'm kind of bored with having only fruit or fries to choose from." The folks over at This Dish Is Veg somewhat hyperbolically cited the news as evidence that hell must have frozen over:

"Right about now Satan himself must be ice skating throughout the underworld like some red suit wearing, two horned Scott Hamilton."

While Denny's did offer a veggie burger before, the Amy's-brand burger that it's now serving in its place is 100 percent vegan. The restaurant's menu still calls it, simply, a veggie burger, however, and it rather obliviously includes melted pepperjack cheese as the topping of choice.

Denny's spins the switch as trying to offer more choices to more customers, but as the nitpicking responses on some of the vegan blogs demonstrate, this demographic may be harder to please than Gordon Ramsay on a bad day.

"I wonder if the grill used to cook Amy's veggie burger is the same one use to cook the bacon, beef, etc.," one poster asks, while another writes: "My husband is veggie, I am vegan, but he has an allergies to oat and tomato, and I am trying to determine if he can eat the one Denny's is offering."

More quinoa, anyone?

Good luck with that one, vegans.

Personally, as a vegan, I don't plan to stop in Denny's for their new vegan burger, but I can acknowledge that it's a nice gesture and something to keep in mind when in a pinch.

This planet is but a grain of sand orbiting around a massive sun that is one of millions, billions in 'our' galaxy, which is also one of billions. Relax, have a burger.

Some people choose to eat meat, some do not... I do not. I also do NOT force my dietary choices upon anyone else. I respect your meat-loving diets and could care less. The least you can do is make a mature statement and not judge others based on their dietary choices, because honestly? Who cares. So no... I will not eat a burger. I guess that leaves more for your ignorant mouth to chew on.

What I SAID what that it really doesn't matter all that much in the grand scheme of things. Please have someone re-read it to you. Have a burger if you want, don't have one if you don't want. I'm cool with it., except when you imply your way is better. It's not. I did NOT criticize anyone. Again, get a grown-up to explain science to you, kay? Thanks bunches and have a nice veggie menu!

In fact, if we have guests, we buy them meat and respect that they choose to eat it. Hopfully Denny's will microwave the Amy "burger" so those who do not wish to eat animal products won't have to. I will continue to make my Amy burger at home. I can then control the situation. Thanks, Denny's, for at least giving it a shot.

A business is there to make a profit - and profits are usually made with large chains by offering affordable items to the masses - the few people who are vegan - let them eat at home.. What if someone ate a steak on the same plate ? When you want to create some kind of illuisionist world to live in why complain when you dont have your specialized needs met ?

We had horrible food at a Denny's Diner a few weeks ago. My daughter complained to the manager about her cheese sticks tasting just like chicken. He admitted they were fried in the same oil as the chicken tenders. So, yeah, expect the veggie burgers to be fried on the same grill as the meat. As for persons with allergies. I wouldn't trust anywhere but my own kitchen. They won't know the ingredients of things that come partially prepared. Better to not chance it. I have heard of restaurants refilling coffee with caffeinated, thinking it won't matter to the decaf drinker. It can. They don't know what is allergy or life threatening or what is just a choice.
