Egg Salmonella Outbreak Leads to Recalls

In the wake of a recall by Iowa's Wright County Egg involving a dozen brands of eggs last week, California's NuCal Foods is expanding a recall of its eggs as more illnesses may be associated with the outbreak.

Los Angeles County health officials said at least 266 people in California have been infected with egg-related Salmonella. Seven cases were identified in Minnesota, Food Safety News reported.

The Centers for Disease Control said it had seen a four-fold increase in cases of Salmonella Enteritidis with the same "genetif fingerprint" or pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) pattern, reported to the agency through PulseNet, a national network of laboratories the CDD coordinates, Food Safety News reported.

Brands in the Iowa recall include: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph's, Boomsma's, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms, and Kemps.

The recent additions from NuCal Foods include shell eggs produced by Iowa's Wright County Egg and packaged by NuCal Foods for distribution in California and Nevada.

Products being recalled are:
  • Bayview Large 5dz, UPC 7-17544-30172-1, Plant Number P-1686, Julian Dates 142-149
  • Mountain Dairy Medium 5dz, UPC 0-11110-89969-9, Plant Number P-1951, Julian Dates 193-208
  • Nulaid Medium 5dz, UPC 0-71230-02140-0, Plant Number P-1091, Julian Dates 167-174
  • Nulaid Medium 5dz, UPC 0-71230-02140-0, Plant Number P-1951, Julian Dates 195-210
  • Sun Valley Medium 5dz, UPC 6-48065-11432-6, Plant Number P-1951, Julian Dates 195-209

Kirk Smith of the Minnesota Department of Health told Food Safety News that customers should cook eggs thoroughly before eating to destroy Salmonella or other bacteria to prevent illness.

Customers who may have purchased the eggs are advised to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

For every confirmed case of Salmonella, there are an estimated 38 unconfirmed cases, Food Safety News reported.

Which means you were just lucky that you never encountered it or more likely your parents washed the eggs really well and killed any sick chickens.

I know you can get salmonella from under cooked eggs anyway but if theyre cooked thouroughly what then heck is the diff.? idk everything gets contaminated somehow now days! and someone said its from the chicken feces? So what then all the chickens started crapping on the eggs everywhere at the same time all at once? and no one seen it and put crap covered eggs in the stores? wtf that dont make sense!!! whatever!!!!!!!!!!!!!
