New McDonald's Angus Snack Wraps -- Taste Tested

Photo: Elizabeth Hait

In early June, Slashfood writer Lindsay Damast attended a product tasting event for McDonald's during which the company unveiled forthcoming menu items such as McCafe Real Fruit Smoothies, McCafe Frappes and Angus Snack Wraps. The smoothies and frappes successfully launched to the public earlier this summer, and McDonald's finally rolled out the snack wraps nationwide yesterday.

Each of the three varieties -- Deluxe, Bacon & Cheese and Mushroom and Swiss -- contains a 100% Angus beef patty wrapped up in a flour tortilla.

Two overall notes on all of the wraps: First, all three contained too much mayonnaise -- it was dripping out of the wrap (as you can tell from the photo above) and onto the wrapper and our desks. We have a big problem with the cheese being overshadowed by the mayo. Secondly, the tortilla wraps themselves were too large. In each instance, we finished the contents of the wrap and found ourselves with leftover tortilla.

Each wrap reviewed in full after the jump ...

Deluxe Angus Wrap

Grade: C-
Nutritional Info: 25 grams fat, 410 calories
What's in it: Angus beef, tomato, American cheese, pickles, lettuce and red onions.
Our testers said: "I wasn't sure how I would feel about eating my burger in a wrap, but turns out it wasn't so bad. However, when looking at the calories and fat compared to the actual burger, I might as well go for the full-fat option." "When I think of a 'snack,' I think of something less heavy and something that will boost my energy level. After eating this, I just wanted to take a nap." "My favorite part about this wrap was the crunchy pickles."

Bacon & Cheese Angus Wrap
Grade: F
Nutritional Info: 21 grams fat, 390 calories
What's in it: Angus beef, bacon, American cheese, pickles and red onions
Our testers said: "The ketchup mixed with the fake, stringy bacon produced a pungent taste in my mouth -- close to drinking tomato juice while eating a dry beef burger with waxy cheese -- it's not a good combination." "This wrap left me with no words -- it was that bad."

Mushroom & Swiss Angus Wrap
Grade: F
Nutritional Info: 26 grams fat, 430 calories
What's in it: Angus beef, mushrooms and Swiss cheese
Our testers said: "If there was a grade letter lower than F, this wrap would have received it." "This is a complete mess in my mouth -- the mushrooms tasted like they came right out of a can (with a metal aftertaste)." "I would much rather eat any one of those Taco Bell Cantina Tacos than ever eat this wrap ever again."

I am REALLY tired of people who 'know best' trashing these eating establisments. The AVERAGE American can't afford to go to a high-end restaurant to eat 'healthy'. IT IS WHAT IT IS!!!! PUT YOUR BIG GIRL PANTIES ON AND DEAL WITH IT!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone can afford to eat healthy - you just have to know how to do it.
If you buy in bulk, items such as pilaf, beans, lettuce, carrots - these things are all cheap.
Don't buy foods in your grocery store when they're not in season (they'll be more expensive because they're being shipped in from an area where they are in season). Better yet, just buy in season foods from your local farmers market. The 'average' American doesn't have to go to a four-star, high class resteraunt (which isn't garunteed to be any healthier, btw) and certainly does not HAVE to eat at McDonalds.

If MC D's could put noodles cooked right, in a cup with simple butter, and parmisian, a LITTLE garlic salt....charge reasonably...they'd sell TONS of those with little cost. They attract a group of people who wouldn't touch MC D's. Kids love it. Adults like it too. Americans CAN eat healthy, Jimmy John's Subs- still fast food, and AWESOME. The wraps described above? MC D's- try some of your own food- ordering it like everyone really gets it- you'd save a lot of time and money on dumb stuff.

If you want your kids to eat better then fix then healthy food. Why does everyone look for reasons to criticize, leave the fast food joints alone, or better yet open your own business and serve your idea of fast food!!

Thus the large number for FAT content coupled with the three Tablespoons of Mayonnaise. The Angus Burger is not any better in the FAT Department. I love a good hamburger, but the thought of all that fat oozing out is revolting and makes me gag. Yet they have people trained to eat this junk.
