Behind the Scenes at NYC's Pop-Tarts World

Just when we thought Times Square had it all -- Pop-Tarts introduces Pop-Tarts World, a 3,000 square-foot sugar metropolis, which opened Tuesday. The store has Pop-Tarts merchandise, a custom T-shirt creation station, the "varietizer" machine and a Pop-Tarts Cafe. Slashfood caught up with Scott Schoessel, COO of Gigunda Group and just had to ask, "Why?"

"We saw an opportunity," said Shoessel. "We started watching what people had to say -- our Facebook fan page has close to 2 million fans. We wanted to bring their passion for Pop-Tarts to life in a tangible way, letting them create an experience of their own."

The most eye-catching contraption is "The Varietizer" machine (see photos below), which allows shoppers to build their own customized box of Pop-Tarts for $12. There are currently 23 different kinds of Pop-Tarts in the machine -- some will be switched out seasonally (Orange Cream, Blueberry Muffin, and Ice Cream Sandwich are current options) and the classics. What I found to be most interesting was the process of choosing your "tarts." On a computer screen, a customer is presented with all the possible choices. Before you make your final decision, the nutritional facts for the specific flavor appear. When I asked Schoessel for the reasoning behind this (I found seeing all those calories listed to be a turn-off), he said "Kellogg's takes nutrition very seriously -- it's also a good way to provide information if people have food allergies."

The centerpiece of the store, the Cafe, lists about 30 menu items (additional items will be rotated in seasonally). The menu is divided into four sections: Oh So Close to Home (Pop-Tarts served toasted, frozen or room temperature), Delectable Delights (small bites such as Pop-Tarts Sushi and a take on the classic kids' snack ants on a log), Chill Out Now (soft-serve ice cream mixed with Pop-Tarts bits) and From the Oven (a bakery section with things like cobbler, cookies and blondies -- with Pop-Tarts pieces mixed in, of course). To "Top it Off," customers can take any of flavor of Pop-Tarts and add additional vanilla, chocolate or cinnamon frosting, candy, sprinkles, dried fruit and nuts and finish it with a drizzle of raspberry, chocolate, vanilla or caramel.

Because of all the buzz on the web about the Pop-Tarts sushi, it was the first thing I headed for. With three different kinds of Pop-Tarts pulverized and then rolled up inside a fruit wrap, it tastes exactly how it sounds -- sweet, possibly too sweet. I would have been more content to empty out the filling and just eat the fruit wrap. However, I can see why it has such an appeal and I truly believe everyone should try it for themselves.

I tried almost everything on the menu, and while there were several items I'd be happy to take seconds of, there are others I'd stay far away from.

What to skip:
Rice Krispies Treats Recipe with Pop-Tarts Pieces - The crust of the Pop-Tarts was not a match for the soft, marshmallow-like texture of the Rice Krispies Treat.
Chocolate Chunk Peanut Butter Blondie - This was so dry I had trouble swallowing it.
Lemon Razzy - The fake lemon flavor and warmer-than-room-temperature tart made for a cloying and messy snack.

Seconds please:
Peach Blueberry Cobbler - Couldn't even tell there were Pop-Tarts pieces in it; it was served warm and would be perfect with a scoop of ice cream.
Chunky Chocolate Chipper - I can admit I had more than one of these soft, chewy chocolate chip cookies.
Ants on a Log? - I think it was the addition of celery, a savory element, that the Pop-Tart could finally not overshadow; all the elements came together nicely.
Make Your Own - It's a fun experience that gets your creative juices flowing -- a great way to take your favorite Pop-Tarts flavor to a new level.

So are there plans to expand to other cities? "We've got grand plans, but we want to see how this one does first," says Schoessel.

Because our rising health insurance payments PAY for their obesity / medical problems ... diabetes .. heart disease ... cancer ...and everything else their poor eating habits cause. And if they don't have health insurance, our TAXES pay for their treatments. It's very much our problem! I pay $700 a month for health insurance, yet I lead a healthy lifestyle and do not eat junk food. I rarely go to the doctor. Know who I'm paying for? And who YOU are paying for? The slobs who exist on fast food and will make a pilgrimage into NYC because they can't live without hitting the Pop Tart Cafe.

8-11-2010 @10:35AM s said... I remember eating pop tarts as a kid. Not all the time, it was a treat that my Mom would surprise us with. I have recently tried them with my kids and they just don't taste the same. I guess I am just an old fart now. I remember a flavor Dutch Apple, Called them about it and they said it was discontinued. Wanted my kids to try it, kinda makes you sad that things are different now. Hope some kid gets a smile and a great experience out of the place.(in moderation) That's what being a kid is all about. As for you idiots that always have negative things to say......be watchful, those negative traits always seem to sneak up on you when you least expect it. Be nice to one another for a change.

8-11-2010 @5:45AM crazyworld said... Come on people .. you must take responsibility for yourselves and your family. If you want to have (indulge) a pop-tart, have it, it not, then DON'T! Moderation is a smart way to live.. it's one of the reasons I have lost 60 pounds and proud of it.

NOBODY should have to feel guilty for having a pop-tart.. especially, if it's at a themed-store for FUN.. in New York City, non-the-less.. get over it!!

It's really tiring hearing people complain about "everybody else" .. be more concerned with yourself, your family and your good friends. Maybe if everybody did that, we'd all be a little better off.

8-11-2010 @10:24AM Anthonie said... I love it! Great idea. Everything in moderation is good for you. The place is for tourists or locals looking for a little treat. Its not an everyday destination. It's something fun and different, not the end of the world. It won't make anyone any fatter than they already are. Its a fun treat, enjoy it.

These things are chock full of high fructose corn syrup (which is poisoning us here in the US) and other various cheap junk....there are toaster pastries that are made without all that crap and imho they taste better. Do a little research on HFCS ....when they started replacing sugar in food with HFCS back in the late 70's that is when obesity and diabetes started going up in spades.

The sad thing is with many Americans is that they use that excuse all day long! Oh, a little donut won't hurt. Another soda won't kill anyone. That bag of Doritos with 40 chemicals tastes so good it can't be bad.....

These folks get all defensive like a momma bear protecting her cub. God forbid someone takes their "treats" away. Then they look down their nose at those of us who know better than to eat this crap. But really, it only shows their lack of intelligence.

Read a book. Do research online. Our bodies were not meant to ingest all these chemicals and when you choose to do so, you are the perfect cow that our government hopes to create. Because when you are sick and ailing they will laugh all the way to the bank with the pharmaceuticals you'll need to keep you alive.

Sound harsh? Perhaps. But a little research will prove I'm right.

8-18-2010 @2:22PM Ginger said... I can't wait to see this place! Being a child of the 70s, I remember Pop Tarts, Tang, Hungry Man frozen dinners [pudding? what WAS that stuff?] and SODA. Better eating through chemistry, right?

We didn't eat much of the "junk" or "fast" food, though, as Mom was a great cook. We wanted to try these new fun things, so we begged for frozen meals and Spagetti-O's. Then after trying them, we begged her for her food!

But I'll definitely hit the Pop Tart place- why not have some fun?
