Baskin-Robbins Retires 5 Icons

For our sweet-toothed readers, we have some bad news to report: Baskin-Robbins announced that it's shelving five of its 31 signature flavors including the classic staple French Vanilla, which was with the company since it started in 1945, Caramel Praline Cheesecake (1970), Campfire S'mores (1975), Apple Pie a La Mode (1976) and Superfudge Truffle (2007). This has happened before, but never to such magnitude.

The tragic exits, though, will make room for five brand-new flavors in honor of Baskin-Robbin's 65th anniversary and the National Ice Cream Month (July), says a Baskin-Robbin's media representative. More details to come on the new additions, which will be introduced this fall.

As for the old flavors? The final tubs have already been sent out to your local outposts, and are only available while supplies last. (Why am I picturing Seinfeld's Newman running for a big pot to fill up on the Soup Nazi's last batch? Pace yourselves.)

Then they're headed into what the company calls their "Deep Freeze," an online archive for retired flavors and those that have had a limited run.

Join our effort on Facebook -- our mission is to gather enough support to convince Baskin-Robbins that they must keep French Vanilla around! Wondering what's the difference between vanilla and French Vanilla? We've got your answer.

You obviously were not brought up on BR. This matter with French
Vanilla is causing my mother to turn over in her grave as I type
this. This is a sacrilege. What will I put under my hot fudge?

As for cancelling French Vanilla, that kind of amazed me. Sure I suppose they have "just" vanilla but it's not exactly an unpopular flavor. Just going by my local supermarket freezer, every brand I see seems to carry both a "normal" vanilla and a French vanilla. Some even more varietys of vanilla, and that's not counting ones like "Cherry Vanilla". So, I'm kind of amazed they cancelled it.

Seriously: you can drop a lot of cash for coffee and a muffin, so why not eat a double ice cream cone instead, with a 'chaser' of super-hot coffee? Only risk beyond the calorie count is that your teeth might shatter like in cartoons...or like safety glass of a windshield in a parked, air-conditioned car, w/windows rolled up on a super-hot day. Anyway: by a New Baskin Robbins, I mean with new color scheme, new uniforms and flavors that 45 flavor stores don't feature. Call it 46 and Beyond. Baskin Robbins is part of a larger corporate structure and probably needs to re-invent or die.

Call me Ms. Consistent, but it is the only flavor of yours that I have EVER eaten since I was 4 years old (and for the last 21 years). I literally leave locations if it is not in rotation that day/week (and you RARELY sell it in pre-packed quarts which I never understood)...Also my mom would like me to give a "shout out" to Pralines n' Cream, her favorite flavor...

Normally I favor Pralines and Cream, but we had finished a day tour in China and returned to our air conditioned hotel in Hong Kong, after a day of stifling heat, with two pints of BR ice cream. Mine was World Class Chocolate. Subsequently, too tired/lazy to think to retrieve the birth control 'stuff' from suitcase across the room. US Navy had separated us for long periods before and after, so it was easy to say 'Bingo!' that was the Baby moment. Beware the World Class Chocolate, folks....powerful in its magic. As for French Vanilla, maybe this is like Coca Cola's 'new formula' strategy of years back, which gave so much publicity. But it is true that there are many excellent grocery store vanillas, not to mention flavors. With prices shooting through the roof on all it it, a shave ice or ice cream maker can be a good investment.

Those of you who suggest switching to regular vanilla or to (gulp!) supermarket vanilla just don't have the refined palates to appreciate the difference. French Vanilla is richer (extra eggs, I'm told) with a creamier, more "vanilla-y" taste. I will miss it terribly, and I probably will not go to B & R anymore. Big mistake you guys!!!
