The Doublicious Reviewed

Photo: Elizabeth Hait

Last week KFC announced its newest sandwich, the Doublicious, which Slashfood writer Jason Best coined (so aptly), the "Son of the Double Down."

Extremely similar to the Double Down, the Original Recipe Doublicious includes an Original Recipe filet topped with bacon, Monterey Jack cheese and Colonel's Sauce. The Grilled Doublicious is a grilled filet topped with Monterey Jack cheese, lettuce and honey mustard BBQ sauce. Both are served on a Hawaiian Bread bun.

The complete review after the jump.

KFC Grilled Doublicious
Grade: D
Nutritional Info: 11 grams fat, 360 calories
Our testers said: "If you blindfolded me and didn't tell me what I was eating, I would have said this was a hot dog." "The combination of the honey mustard and the sweet Hawaiian bun was overwhelming, way too sweet." "I couldn't tell whether I was tasting the cheese or the sauce." "I'd much rather splurge on the calories and fat and eat the fried version."

KFC Original Doublicious
Grade: C+
Nutritional Info (small): 23 grams fat, 470 calories
Our testers said: "This is a much better combo -- the saltiness of the fried chicken balances out the sweet bread." "I'd much rather have the sandwich with the Colonel's Sauce rather than the honey mustard BBQ." "While the bun itself does not taste good, it is soft and fresh -- like it just came out of the oven, which is surprising for a fast-food establishment."

However, my family and I prefer the fried chicken from Hardee's over KFC at any time and the chicken sandwiches from Wendy's. That is, when we eat fast food at all. Hardee's I believe might be a Southern US franchise rather than nationwide.

Put into a bowl with a tablespoon of mayo, and a tablespoon of diced celery. Mix gently, then put it back into the sandwich. Cut in haf & serve. Drink lemonade iced tea as a beverage. Enjoy the summer....Alfred-

Biggest hint for at home cooking - buy some Panko bread crumbs and coat your chicken in this and bake it - man is this great tasting chicken. Don't know how to bread it - it's easy - wash chicken breasts in water, dunk them in some flour to coat them, dip them in some raw egg (think scrambled eggs with being cooked!), and then put them in a zip lock bag with the Panko bread crumbs and shake it all over the chicken breast then bake 350 degrees for about 40 minutes - use a meat thermometer to be sure. Beats anything KFC do and takes about 60 minutes - takes me at least 30 minutes to get to KFC and back anyway!

The chicken salad sounds like a splendid idea, as does the oven chicken recipe.

Can't anyone see that this, ( all ) of AOL news is just ads placed by publisicst and agents?

The review is as disgusting as the sandwich, ( called food).

This isn't intended to be an everyday thing. Before the 70's people rarely ate out, so it wasn't a problem. Now it's like everyday three times a day for some, yeah that would cause a heart attack. When I go to Burger King I get a whopper with heavy everything, so it's got plenty of lettuce, onions and tomatoes. Kind of like eating a salad with it, which helps. One of my friends doesn't like any vegetables on it, course maybe that's why he can't lift anything when he works. If you balance it out by eating right most of the time it won't bother you. In that documentary super size me there was a guy who's been eating up to eight big macs a day since the 70's and it didn't bother him. Maybe it's the fries and soda that really causes it. The HFCS they use since the 80's is more likely to be a cause.

The sandwich's nutritional value is a big factor which he's pointing out. That would be like reviewing a computer and not mentioning the user interface.

I'm so sick of people complaining how hard it is to lose weight and their diet consists of pop, junk food, little to no veggies and fruit, and not working out. Lazy ass people need to hit the treadmill and lay off this kind of food.

And don't bring up that crap about insurance costs because fat people aren't the reason. It all boils down to corporate greed. I say if somebody wants to eat this or anything else, it's their business. If you don't want to eat it, don't -- but keep your condemnation to yourself. After all, what are YOU doing that somebody else wouldn't approve of? Bet you wouldn't like them wagging a finger in your face, now would you?

This country has an obesity rate of about 34% - that means 66% of this country's people are not obese, so B, keep your beeotch mouth shut and go peddle your self righteousness somewhere else - this forum is about food, fast or not, not about your opinion on how fricking perfect you are in comparison to everyone else.

As to the sandwich, it's OK, but honestly, the one without the bun is much better - neither are overly healthy, but if you limit fast food to a couple of times a month it doesn't matter. I say enjoy life while you are here, you're going to be a long time dead!
