The Silly Secret about Chicken McNuggets

Proust had his madeleines to evoke the taste of childhood; those of us born after the atomic age have chicken McNuggets.

Turns out the little poultry bites are made of some of the same stuff that goes into one of the most popular toys of the latter 20th century: Silly Putty.

The shocking (well, sort of shocking) revelation came as part of a CNN investigation as to why McNuggets on one side of the Atlantic taste different than on the other. Apparently, British McNuggets are cooked and then coated, where as the opposite is true for American ones. Because the British McNuggets absorb less oil, they have less fat.

But that's not the only unsettling difference.

American nuggets contain at least two industrial chemicals, the sort with names that are as hard to pronounce as Icelandic volcanoes. Tertiary butylhydroquinone (tBHQ) is a petroleum-based preservative, and dimethylpolysiloxane is an "anti-foaming agent," which also happens to be used in making "that peculiar pinkish substance that bounces like rubber and stretches like taffy"...Silly Putty!

To be fair, as a nutritionist at NYU points out to CNN, the chemicals most likely don't pose any health risk.

After all, Silly Putty is non-toxic, right?

Sure, I like the taste but every time I take a bite and look at what's inside it looks like tofu or something other than real chicken. They're probably shipped frozen anyway so why do they need a bunch of chemicals and preservatives in them? McDonalds needs to find a way to keep the great taste but use only real chicken meat. They've perfected their fries. I don't see the why they can't perfect the chicken nugget.

Nothing at all surprising about this - what's surprising is that I had actually forgotten, and started to EAT an order of McNugs every once in awhile when in a diabetic crisis. I've known about this sh*t since my children were little - back in the sixties. A heartfelt thanks to whoever is responsible for this article - whether AOL or somebody else!

But, do the math- the fact that they are on every other street corner, tells me that someone else is not doing the cooking tonight. If you choose the fast-food alternative, please don't whine about it.
So, who regulates what passes for ingredients in these 'fast-food' items? You do not, and I certainly don't. It is a mass market, what-ever sells goes in that bag. If a chicken nugget made with 20-plus ingredients tastes OK, and can be made cheaply, in it goes! You or I would probably leave out about 19 of the ingredients, and the quality would be much better. But then we'd be tied to the kitchen, cooking our own food. How strange is that? Just remember no-one is selling 'quality' here, it is supply & demand. As long as you buy them, someone will sell 'em.
As a published author, I wrote "Our Boomer Years" www.tatepublishing.com, which notes so many ways our lives have changed since 1946. The concept of 'fast-food' did not even exist then!
Before TV, kids played outside, or tended the garden, while much food was home-canned. Imagine home-grown food! Home-cooked food! Imagine the WORK! Now you know why 'fast-food' exists. To be honest, there ARE times when I pull into a fast food joint, say on a trip, or just for the novelty of it. But I do not live there, and I do understand the difference between 'fast-food' and a quality meal. Let the buyer beware!

Some complain about the naturally derived ingredients, like sugar and HFCS. I'm all for eating healthy, but the fear that many have of food is mind-blowing. Are McNuggets going to kill you? Probably if you eat them every single day of your life. But since most of us have a brain and know that doing so isn't in our best interest the "shock and awe" about this is very comical. HFCS is from CORN. Sugar is from a PLANT. Kraft Singles are made from....wait for it.....CHEESE (watched a whole program on how its made, and it was fascinating!). Even some herbs can work against you.

I really wish the foodie police would just stop the hysteria. Really.

"Tertiary Butyl Hydroquinone (TBHQ) is the synthetic food grade antioxidant, which was developed to be used in stabilizing various vegetable oils, fats and food against oxidative deterioration, thus retrading development of rancidity in these products and extending their storage life." http://www.tbhq.org/tbhq.htm

Dimethylpolysiloxane "is an antifoaming agent which is used in fats and oils. It prevents foaming and spattering when oils are heated and prevents foam formation during the manufacture of wine, refined sugar, gelatin, and chewing gum. It is also termed methylpolysilicone." http://food.oregonstate.edu/glossary/d/dimethylpolysiloxane.html

If you wish to avoid these two chemicals, do not eat ANY foods containing vegetable oils, nothing fried no matter where or who fries it. Even in your own home.

But now I avoid all kinds of food like that because I am on a diet. I am trying to lose 30 pounds in 30 days. I do not know how possible this is, however, I lost 8 pounds my first week. I have a blog that talks about everything I do on my diet. Check it out at http://zellersdiet.blogspot.com/

Any company using HFCS in their products does not have anyone's health in mind, not to mention the silly putty! Check out the movement forming against HFCS: http://organicconnectmag.com/wp/2010/05/the-impact-of-one-mans-outrage/

Does it make difference that the petroleum derived product is added to the oil or in the ingredients for the chicken? It is still in your gut and your system still has to process it. Just because you do not drop dead after you eat it does not mean it has caused you no harm. It still has an effect on you. This is just from one source that you are aware of. There are other compounds in the food we eat and nobody can predict how these compounds react with our system. YOU ARE DYING A SLOW DEATH. Thank goodness the human body is very resilient and we always try to preserve life until it finally becomes a toxic waste dump
For those who like fake food, just keep loving it.. And while you are at it, add some fluoride to the witches brew. Yes that fluoride that the government says it’s ok but used as a poison. I hate when the people act ignore the obvious. The problem here is that it takes more work for Americans to get off their lazy behind in comparison to just continue with their daily grind and trying to pay the bills

Chemicals in the food. for quite awhile, not any fast food place could call their shakes "Milk Shakes". This summer, however, Gold Star Chilli is selling a real milk shake so does UDF (maybe some places are trying to make healthier foods.) Mc'D'S has started Smoothies this summer.Sugar in product is the largest problem. Everyone has to learn to investigate, and only accept or try to eat healthier, real food and read content whether at the grocery or resturant, count carbs, limit fats, get outside and off the couch. Diabetes is the result for many people, shorter life spans and sick people who can not be productive and happy. Each person owes it to themselves to try to be their "Best"
