Friendly's Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt Taste Test

Photo: Sarah De Heer

After reporting yesterday on KFC's Double's Down newest rival, Friendly's Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt, we had to try one for ourselves. This glorified patty melt consists of a Friendly's Big Beef burger with lettuce, tomato, and mayo and, instead of a bun, two grilled cheese sandwiches -- we can't make this stuff up.

The complete review after the jump.

Friendly's Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt
Grade: B+
Nutritional Info: 1500 calories, 97 grams fat, 2090 mgs sodium

While completely over the top, this sandwich is also pure genius. Yes, it's higher in calories, fat and sodium than the Double Down, but the ingredients in this sandwich are more harmonious, making it an embarrassingly pleasurable eating experience. (As one of our readers recently commented, "...at its heart, all this is is a cheeseburger on buttered toast.")

The grilled cheese "buns" were buttery, oozing with just the right amount of cheese and just the right amount of greasiness. True, the burger could have been more plump and juicy but it was the right amount of beef to balance out the two grilled cheese sandwiches. The only thing we'd do differently is skip the lettuce. Watery, shredded lettuce did not pair well with the grilled cheese.

The verdict: Considering the nutritional facts, it's going to be hard to eat another one of these without feeling significant guilt and remorse. However, we applaud Friendly's for the invention; they've guaranteed that cardiologists around the world will not be short of business.

We're starting to nervously wonder what crazy concoction will be thought up of next, and kindly ask fast-food establishments from around the country to go easy on us.

The double down is breadless made with chicken no vegatable and has a grilled no carb version. This is a basic patty melt made from beef grilled bread cheese and veggies??

This Friendly's grilled cheese burger-melt is loaded with carbohydrates. The success of the KFC Double-Down is in large part due to the fact it is the only fast food sandwich (the non-breaded grilled version) suitable for diabetics, epileptics on the MCT diet, Atkins dieters, or other persons who must restrict the carbs in their diet due to gluten allergies, etc. Until the restaurant chains and their reviewers wake up and realize the fundamental reason for the KFC Double-Down success is the fact it's the only low-carb sandwich in town, they'll never provide any competition or choices for the perhaps 30 million Americans who must restrict their intake of refined carbohydrates.

"pure genius" .. is that what you call it? it was only a matter of time for kfc to add infected, tortured cattle to its menu of infected, tortured chickens. i highly reccomend the book 'eating animals' by jonathan safran foer ... it's not an 'activist' book, it's a book loaded with facts about factory farming. even if you don't change your eating habits (which you most likely will), at least you won't be kept in the dark anymore.

Wow...i have to agree with Rachelvis...the idea of other people doing the grammar/spellcheck thing on these comments is completely moronic and even more so absolutely pointless....i don't get it the need and desire to lift oneself up to glorify one's ability to spell or write properly when absolutely no one in the entire word cares one iota other than the persons making such comments in the first place-- which is a pretty clear indication that the person doing such things truly has no life whatsoever. And then they want to top it off by continuing to make comments on the comments ...wow...blows my mind MORE than the double grilled cheese sandwich with a burger wedged betwixt the two.

Big Boy Restaurants had a burger melt, that tasted like more, as we used to say. More of everything to delight your tastebuds. The fried sole fish sandwich, with coarse breading on a buttered and toasted bun, with shredded lettuce melted into warm, unsweetened tartar sauce, was... Let me put it this way. During the munching period, I thought I was in heaven and didn't have a care in the world. Do you think Friendly's sandwich can do that? hmm?

They have only two slices of grilled bread and one or two slices of cheese. This is two entire grilled cheese sandwiches with a burger in between. It looks like an economical way for a mom and two kids to share one lunch. Each kid gets a grilled cheese and mom gets the naked burger and veggies. Works for me.
