After reporting yesterday on KFC's Double's Down newest rival, Friendly's Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt, we had to try one for ourselves. This glorified patty melt consists of a Friendly's Big Beef burger with lettuce, tomato, and mayo and, instead of a bun, two grilled cheese sandwiches -- we can't make this stuff up.
The complete review after the jump.
Friendly's Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt
Grade: B+
Nutritional Info: 1500 calories, 97 grams fat, 2090 mgs sodium
While completely over the top, this sandwich is also pure genius. Yes, it's higher in calories, fat and sodium than the Double Down, but the ingredients in this sandwich are more harmonious, making it an embarrassingly pleasurable eating experience. (As one of our readers recently commented, "...at its heart, all this is is a cheeseburger on buttered toast.")
The grilled cheese "buns" were buttery, oozing with just the right amount of cheese and just the right amount of greasiness. True, the burger could have been more plump and juicy but it was the right amount of beef to balance out the two grilled cheese sandwiches. The only thing we'd do differently is skip the lettuce. Watery, shredded lettuce did not pair well with the grilled cheese.
The verdict: Considering the nutritional facts, it's going to be hard to eat another one of these without feeling significant guilt and remorse. However, we applaud Friendly's for the invention; they've guaranteed that cardiologists around the world will not be short of business.
We're starting to nervously wonder what crazy concoction will be thought up of next, and kindly ask fast-food establishments from around the country to go easy on us.

I also have a pet peeve about incorrect grammar and misspellings in Internet postings. I am amazed that so few people care about the quality of their remarks that will be read around the world. Are these people stupid or lazy?
I, for one, do not understand, what is "Friendly's?" What does it have to do with KFC? Next, is this sandwich being now offered at KFC, or is Friendly's a fast food joing that we don't have here in the DFW area of Texas. I have never heard of Friendly's. I am amazed that a restaurant would knowingly add so many calories to their menu in one sandwich, most of which are fat to an already high calorie food like a burger. A grilled Cheese sandwich is a meal by itself, and this new sandwich basically is 3 sandwiches in one. Four pieces of bread? I think it is absolutely irresponsible of any business to continue to push such unhealthy foods when obesity has become such a major cause of death. Obesity in children has become much to common. Wouldn't you say that smoking in a room where oxygen is being used is not only dangerous, but totally irresponsible of an adult? Same with taunting people with high fat, high calorie food when obesity is killing people and is one of the main causes of so many unhealthy children.
One good grilled cheese sandwich with good quality bread, served with fresh fruit, or a fruit and gelatin salad is a nice meal that tastes good, is plenty of food for anyone, and would not contribute to the problem of obesity in America.

Not only do we have businesses creating food choices for us that are morally irresponsible, in regards to leading people down the path of making choices which create real long term health issues, but we have people APPLAUDING the fact that businesses don't seem to care about the long term health implications on their customers or our society as a whole. If you eat healthy and think it doesn't affect you, you'd better take a look at insurance rates...the fatter America gets, the more we need to go to the doctor, the more we go to the doctor for non-preventative care, the more insurance rates go up for everyone..
Oh, and for all the people criticizing the "spellcheckers" on the board.... since when is it a BAD thing to be smart, educated, and able to communicate effectively in written form?

Some people can eat this food all day and have no trouble some don't have to eat bad food at all and still get clogged arteries . The real problem is genes for some and lack of exercise for others You got to admit a good cheeseburger sure taste special
