Friendly's New Burger Takes On The Double Down

Photo: Friendly's

KFC's Double Down sandwich couldn't hold the spotlight forever...we knew it was only a matter of time before someone pushed the envelope even further. And here it is: the Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt from Friendly's.

The name "Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt" hardly does justice to this psycho-brilliant monstrosity, which amounts to three sandwiches morphed into one: First, there's a Friendly's Big Beef burger, but instead of a bun, there are two (count 'em, two!) grilled cheese sandwiches. Open wide.

More after the jump...
Cue the requisite gasp of shock as we roll out the numbers: 1500 calories (870 of those from fat); 79g of saturated fat; and a whopping 2090mg of sodium (trouncing the Double Down, which weighs in at a paltry 1380mg of salt).

carb counter

I did try the grilled double-down withouth the sauce (they told me it had sugar it in), but it was too processed and not worth the price so unless I am in a similar situation where I was away from home and needed a quick meal, I won't go to KFC anytime soon.
Every one is so bent out of shape about fat and sodium, which are not a problem for most of us in the absence of dietary carbohydrate (sugar).

Oh, and this sandwich is nothing new. I've seen it been done on the 'net for at least two years.

Now I love a good burger, and I mean Burger...also I love good sandwhiches and I don't care if they are fattening the tastier and more fattening the better! what bothers me about this one is it doesn't look good at all, there is no consistency in the way its built, and the thing must be four or five inches thick, how the hell do you enjoy something you cannot get into your mouth? nope there are many great Cheese burgers at many places, to me its a fine line between having all the stuff in them and also being built so you can get your mouth around it? I now live here in Florida and am sorry to say there are no Carls Jr's here, no In n Out burgers here, no Jack in the boxes here, and the majority places here don't know what makes for a great Cheese Burger, or how to prepare one, so sad!!!

Order it and give each child a grilled cheese sandwich and the dieter can eat the burger and veggies. Three people will be fed for the price of one. Of course, they'll need the money they save for Cholesterol and High Blood Pressure medications.

I agree the friendlys version has too much bread...the purists will use thin cut bread for the grilled cheese sandwiches. I don't think that a fast food joint can do this burger justice.

I tried the Double down and could not choke it down due to the saltiness. There really is no reason that the Fatty melt should have such high sodium levels....for goodness sake....are they adding salt to it???

I love that food like this is available....it should be relished as a treat not a staple :)

Food like this won't kill you; it will maim you and that's going to mean keeping people alive with extraordinary measures that are degrading to the recipient (anybody ever had a Foley catheter or had to wipe themselves with a bath towel because they're too obese reach the posterior end of their digestive tract??) and REALLY expensive to everybody else. If you're thinking about eating "food" like this do everybody else a favor and play Russian roulette with a Colt .45.
