Melissa Wiegand Brown of Homestead, Fla., found the mold in her drink and posted photos of the "oval, skin-like substance" on Facebook. The pictures went viral.
On Friday, Kraft Foods responded to the blogosphere with a section devoted to the Capri Sun controversy on its Facebook page.
The company tested the substance Brown found and determined it was mold, Chicago Breaking Business reported. An independent laboratory -- Silliker, Inc -- then confirmed the finding, Kraft spokeswoman Bridget MacConnell said.
On its Facebook page Kraft said that while the mold finding is unpleasant, it is not indicative of a wider safety issue and the company is not issuing a Capri Sun recall.
"An issue with a single pouch does not indicate a broader problem, particularly because we were told from the start it was a leaking package and this product is preservative free," the company said on Facebook.
"When a leak occurs, a preservative free beverage can spoil and mold can grow. We believe that is what happened here. Because this can happen, we include a message on the carton that consumers should discard any leaking or damaged packages."
While Kraft said that while not common, because the product is preservative free, mold issues occur from time to time.
"We regret this situation and understand that it is unpleasant," Kraft said.
"Many of us are parents, too, so we care about what our kids and your kids drink. The safety of our food and the well being of our consumers are critically important to us. And we're doing everything we can to address the situation as quickly as possible."

She was very smart to bring this to the company's attention, whether or not the product spoiled (which, by the way, she didn't know it even had a leak until they went to drink it and squeezed enough juice out out of the hole to notice). You might want to stop jumping to conclusions and making assumptions, especially if you're going to call her an idiot.

When I shop, I squeeze the yogurt containers to make sure they are not leaking. I also check eggs for cracks. A cracked egg will spoil very quickly

It's in a pouch and there is no way she could not have seen that something was wrong with the pack. And it's Florida, HOT AND HUMID. Perfect conditions for food to spoil. How do I know? I live in Florida. It's extremely hot and humid and food will spoil quickly if not refridgerated or frozen.

If the product had a break in the seal at the top of the container, and the container had been stored upright, then there's no way the consumer would know that there was a leak. Any break in an air-tight container would allow mold to grow, so it doesn't have to be dripping! There's no need for name-calling here. What are you in, kindergarden?

6-16-2010 @8:31PM Dum Dum said... WOW!!! The package was leaking and we are talking about a preservative free drink, of course bacteria/mold is going to get in it and form. "HEY LADY IF THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE PACKAGE CALL THE COMPANY AND GET A REFUND" Why post it all over the internet and make a huge deal over it.... SOME PEOPLE...lol

It looked like it could have been someone's disection project that was left in the formaldehyde and stunk up the whole first floor of her home. I think she was trying to be cautious in case this meant there was a bigger safety issue.
6-17-2010 @1:59AM Tawny said... I couldn't agree more; everybody wants their 15 minutes . . . In the good old days, we would have taken the product back to the store or called the company for a refund and coupons for FREE product.

Because I inconvenienced the staff with a simple inquiry as to the availability of condiments, I returned home to find that one of them had hawked up the biggest, juiciest loogie from their innards and doused my burger with his/her own brand of lung butter. Whose fault was that? Do I still have legal recourse? Does estoppel by laches apply? Should I be examined by my physician for possible exposure to exotic agents? And what about the psychological trauma I've had to endure for so many a year?

Many people affected by the oil spill are at risk of losing their jobs, income, etc all because of something that BP has failed to fix. I was just in Florida last week at Ft Myers and Sanibel and there was NOT any oil on those beaches. I wish it could be said about all the other beaches as well but it is NOT Florida's or any of the other gulf coast states' faults.
As for the capri suns, they do have a tendency to leak as does any other plastic or puch type container. I once bought mixed fruit cups for my kids only to find that the cups had been damaged and mold was in one of the containers. I just returned it for a refund. I have had packages of capri sun's with leaky pouches and I have either returned the box to the store or just thrown it away as it was not worth the risk to my children.
6-16-2010 @10:40PM Maia said... Um actually the coast is clear in South Florida, It is the upper panhandle that is affected, and second that is NOT FUNNY. How would you feel if BP dumped millions of barrels of oil in your backyard and then left you to clean up the mess??? Would you be laughing and making jokes then?? I think you would be mad. Do you find it funny that 11 people lost their lives because of BP's failure to follow code when building their stupid oil rig? You are an idiot, maybe when it happens to you, you will quit behaving like an immature insensitive jerk.
As far as the moldy juice goes, she is entitled to a refund. It isn't her fault that the drink became moldy. I do think posting crap all over the internet was a bit of overkill, though...
6-18-2010 @12:51AM eb said... First off, "K," I was going to have my wedding ceremony where you said you just visited, but the sad reality is that just because all of the beaches are not affected yet, doesn't mean that they will not be....thanks to BP. I simply have high hopes that it will be resolved by the time my wedding is in fruition...
Second of all, you are right about packages. The way I personally look at it is that people are not remembering when they have experienced an issue without confronting it, and if they haven't, they eventually will. I have bitten into bones and huge chards of glass numerous times as I have attempted to eat slices of pizza, desserts, etc., and never have gotten to the point where the whole world needed to know. Simply notify the company, request a refund, and go on with your life. It's not you ever have to purchase the same product again. Only if it is seen as an epidemic that will affect the health of others should it be made into a controversy as this one is. I will continue to consume this product at my own risk, as I have done with EVERY other item I have consumed my entire life up to this point....
