Is an organic apple worth the extra cost? Do you need to worry about pesticides when buying pineapples?
A new cheat-sheet will help you figure out which produce is pesticide-residue prone and should be bought organic and which are safe to buy from conventional growers, Lifehacker.com reported.
There are 12 foods on the list that are better off organic, if you're concerned about pesticides (it turns out apples are among the high-pesticide offenders). There is also a list of the "clean fifteen" -- foods with the lowest pesticide residue counts.
On the "always buy organic" list are: apples, cherries, grapes, celery, potatoes, bell peppers, peaches, strawberries, pears, peaches, nectarines and raspberries.
Foods with low pesticide residue counts are: cabbage, watermelon, sweet potatoes, mango, kiwi, papaya, pineapple, asparagus, bananas, broccoli, eggplant, onions, tomatoes, avocados and corn.

In some cases, organic is worried to be more dangerous towards infants since the processing is not as stringent and bacteria sometimes makes it through. But nutritionally, they are the same.

And it's a choice that may depend on how much a family has to spend on food. Consumer Reports had an excellent article a while back about pesticides. For foods like apples, just wash the darn things!

EVERY single leaf is saturated with the pesticides used. the chemicals go in from the roots, ...and are IN every leaf.
organic food is not a HUGE expense, ***depending upon the food. This country, world, ...is "backwards"......They spend 30 bucks on fake nails filled with chemicals....they spend 60 plus on hair cuts and dyes, ...but they dont give a damn what goes into their own body, ...they dont want to spend 1 to 3 dollars "extra" on a bag of organic fruits or veggies.
If you watching every single penny, as most are these days, ...watch the sales.....contact the maker of your favorite foods, etc, most will send coupons ......or cut out something in your life, way less important than the food that goes into your mouth.

Nutritionally, there is a HUGE difference between organic and non-organic.
NON-organic foods (fruits, grains, vegetables and animals) are sprayed with harmful pesticides, fed growth hormones, antibiotics and pesticide-ridden grain and corn.
The chemicals LEACH vitamins and minerals from the foods and the accumulative effect of eating NON-organic foods that have absorbed pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides can cause cancer.
Not to mention the toxic industrial waste (heavy metals, etc.) fertilizer that is being dumped on NON-organic crops with the government's blessing.
ALWAYS choose ORGANIC over non-organic. Is your health and your families health worth it?

Tomatoes are one of the highest pesticide foods - and then there is the can liner issue. Besides which, buying as much organic as you can contibutes to (the planet and) all of your food, when you consider that the soil, air, water, and wildlife, are all affected when pesticides (poison) and hormones (messing with Mother Nature) are used in farming.

There are hundreds of articles about it, just do some research. the word "organic" just means it does not use the "traditional" pesticide. For the most part, "organic" pesticides are WORSE than if they were injecting the stuff with plutonium. copper Sulfide is the pesticide of choice for "organic" growers. And copper Sulfide is HIGHLY toxic and unlike DDT and other insecticides, it does not wash away, it becomes part of the soil, so no matter what, it becomes part of the food..... and that cannot be washed off.

Either way, the bottom line, people need to be more concerned with what they eat and feed their kids AND PETS for that matter! Its common sense, but a country made up so many that think they "need" to eat meat too, lacks much common sense but thats another forum.
People need to educate themselves a bit too, ......
and realize a few more dollars on a grocery bill to get better quality food is not that big of a deal, or not as big as too many people make it out to be. Prices have come down a lot for organic produce over the past few years....
....so if anyone here is complaining about the prices of organic food ...spend 30 bucks a month on "getting their nails" done.....or 100 bucks on a pair of sneakers? ...well....then...................

To be considered an organic farming operation, one must be able to provide proof that only approved sprays were placed on the land within the last 3 years. Apples are one of the most sprayed fruits because of apple scab, something that has plagued the industry for years. It is a fungus, and like most fungi, love the warm moist air. There are trees out there now that have the ability to resist this fungus (as it attaches to the leaves), however its ability is limited, and are expensive to graft. Unfortunately, most pesticides need to be applied either before, or just after a certain wetting period occurs, typically, this is any significant rainfall. Because consumers all seem to think that apples need to be perfect looking, these sprays are essential in keeping the fruit looking nice. If you want something that hasn't had any sprays on it, it would be covered in apple scab, and nobody would eat it. Also in regards to sprays, there are harvest withholding time limits, in which after a spray has been applied, the fruit cannot be harvested within a certain amount of time. This ensures that any residual spray within the fruit is so insignificant, it would not have any effect on the human system, unless you eat 1000's of apples a day. The moral of the story is, ORGANIC FOODS ARE STILL SPRAYED WITH PESTICIDES, just a different type, and it would be impossible to feed the world on organic foods. Oh, and one more thing, if you still think apples are horrible. The seeds contain arsenic...
