If you build it, they will come. They will; we promise. Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's tomato tower elevates one of the most straight-on, delicious combos simply by stacking it. Take one astoundingly ripe tomato (heirloom or brand-new variety; your call). Blanch it (see the recipe at blogger/photographer ulteriorpicture's post), slice it, layer it with olive oil and fresh basil leaves. Drizzle with ulteriorpicture's tomato vinaigrette to up the tomato ante. Repeat. Eat. Swoon.
A cool presentation of tomato towers might use a variety of colors and flavors: big red Early Girls, striped Green Zebras and maybe throw in some Yellow Brandywines. And, tomato fiends, here's an event you won't want to miss: The Tomatomania seedling sale is coming to Arcadia, Calif. starting today as well as to Lothian, Md; and Litchfield, Conn., in May. See the Tomatomania website to explore all the varieties available for planting.

I've known farmers and they have a lot more foresight than you do.
They don't depend on welfare like you do.
Unemployment benefits run for around 6 months. The benefits that were canceled were extensions after that six months and extensions have been going on for two and a half years!!
It's about time those people stop draining the system and get a job. It's time they stop being a boil on the side of society. Is that you DIGI? You complained that unemployment stopped? You been on unemployment for two and a half years?
Democracy? The USA is a REPUBLIC based on Democracy principles.
Maybe, hell no, YOU DIGI need to take all that time from being UNEMPLOYED and spend time educating yourself instead of writing BITTER banter.
Unless you have something constructive to say, just take any tomato and shove it where the sun does not shine.
And I solved my unemployment problem......I'm over in Iraq and have been for two and a half years.
I'm not gonna snuggle you like some of these others have, your a jerk ! You look like a jerk, you smell like a jerk, you act like a jerk, you sound like a jerk........Your a jerk DIGI..
I apologize to other readers because these comments are supposed to be about food, but when I put up with all the problems here in Iraq and come to something like this and see some whiny butt, I have to say something.

PS Every year my father and my wife had a contest to see who would get the first edible tomato. He always won........we miss him.

4-27-2010 @12:07AM Digi said... As I read the comments I will admit not everyone is blind to the obvious as some like Davey. Its ignorance like yours that cause my bitterness. You know farmers huh. I doubt it for EVERY farmer Ive talked to/worked with/ worked for have agreed if not equally, eunthisistically with me on this very matter. You say we exploit unemployment. WAKE UP MORON, Ive been working for YEARS and paid my unemployment insurence. SO AT THE MOST IM GETTING MONEY BACK I PAID FOR. Take your blind ways elsewhere.
4-27-2010 @12:36AM Digi said... OH and BY THE WAY welfare is ALOT different than unemployment. Maybe if you were so busy sitting on your knees for the government you might know a bit more than 'Sir yes sir'.
4-27-2010 @12:46AM Digi said... By the way, addressing more ignorance in your sir yes sir comment, I was on unemployment for less than 6 months. WHy dont you check plant cycles and relize there's over 10 months of ONLY expenses. HALF if not more than that is during winter season. Now if you had a clue you'd realize especially these days income from harvest BARELY IF DOES meet the expense JUST to lay down more crop. In the past 2 years AS YOU EMPHASIZE this 'income meeting expense' has shifted to where the expense out does the income, making even what ive seen this year, some farmers all but completely shut down fields OR change crop to something cheaper or more in demand (soil bean and corn being the main ones).
Lets not forget the expense of employing hands on a farm forcing ALOT of farmers out here to cut pay if not jobs al together and tend to fields with very few hands, causing more crop loss.
You sir need to take your head out of that government issues MRE and powdered eggs and realize while you maybe willing to sign you life away theres AMERICANS HERE that are suffering. A TRUE SOLDIER might care that his countrymen are starving while he's off fighting a war thats well lets face it............a pointless endevour these days and a complete waste of money that could go towards sustaining OUR ACTUAL PEOPLE. Apparently you been gone too long to realize its people like me the like that are feeding YOUR family while you're off doing something else. Im glad you think that 'paycheck' is worth the misery of your own countries citizens.
4-26-2010 @11:24PM Tess said... We need to take care of our land, take care of our Farmers -- and take care of America........ It's very simple! We shouldnt try to save a fish - and then put the Farmers out of work ..........gezus -- just take the fish and save it somewhere else for the time being. Its our lands health and the Farmers that keep this country alive........ Dear Digi, dont think all of us are against you.........I agree with what you are saying, but rest assure many regular folks like myself - pray that you all get back on your feet as soon as possbile.... (( PS, I grow my own tomatoes and vegetables here during the summer -- But i support the farmers - whole-heartedly !!!)).

4-27-2010 @1:06AM KittyDee said... Wow, Digi, shut the F up. This is about tomatoes. No one here really wants to read about the government in a discussion about tomatoes.
On another note, I'm more of a fan of raw tomatoes. My mom makes (I'm sure there's a name for it) a tomato salad with fresh basil, a little oil and vinegar, and mozzarella. This looks quite good, and I wouldn't be opposed to trying it. Not a fan of the green tomatoes, I have tried them and they're just okay to me.

4-27-2010 @1:33AM Digi said... Thats OKAY KittyDee, go about your 'as long as im happy' way. If you dont like it its as easy as not reading anything posted by me. Otherwise you're complaining to deaf ears, cause I cant hear people too well who speak out there arse.
4-27-2010 @1:50AM Natalie said... IT'S ABOUT TOMATOES. I am so sick of people with "better than thou" attitudes on forums about things completely irrelevant to their opinions. I understand the plight farmers are having, I also understand that the majority of their plight is because of the government. Actually, I'm pretty much against the current government and their hesitation (to say the least) to help anyone in need. Are you even from America, with your use of "arse"? Or are you really American and trying to sound "cultured"? How about you pull your head out of YOUR ass and and realize that THE ARTICLE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR OPINION OF THE GOVERNMENT. Actually, it has nothing to do with the government, period. How about you stop posting on articles if all you want to do is criticize this or that? Unless, of course, you're going to criticize tomatoes, or that you didn't like this recipe.
4-27-2010 @5:03AM LinMG said... To Kitty-- and Natalie: AMEN! YES YES! THank you, I agree totally with you. SHut up Digi. I think many others agree but just arent posting. Yah, I stopped reading your posts but I still have the right, as others have said here, to say what I think - as you have done ad nauseum in your repeated posts. geez, give it a rest already with your patronizing, crude and vulgar words and your political views. It's about a friggin' tomato, for heaven's sake!!!!! Geesh, get over it already.
4-27-2010 @7:09PM Digi said... When you 3 get done blowing each other you might realize such ....types of individuals as yourself (blind to the obvious, ignorant to the world, ready to let it all hit rock bottom as long as you're okay attitudes) need to be force fed reality. Perhaps once people like yourselves realize that something as simple as a TOMATOE (which makes this conversation, although not directly, but indirectly relevant) may soon become a expensive rarity even more so then now, making such ...recipes obsolete. SO go ahead, continue to just sit there not even REALIZING whats going on, until its too late then people like you will whine and cry when its pointless to do so. But then...from you comments I can safely assume...you're not expected of much more than that anyways.
4-27-2010 @4:31AM whoops said... I'm grateful I have an area to grow veggies and fruits. Fresh is best, heirloom tomatoes are pretty tasty if homegrown, like most produce. I'm grateful to live in the south where we have a long growing season. In fact, I'm grateful for a lot of things.

I own a business too that's struggling and Uncle Sambama hasn't given me a dime or helped me in the least. I'm sure your 3 baskets of lame tomatoes really feeds the country. You're a small-time, small-minded frigging BLOWHARD crybaby!

As for the rest of you especially @Natalie. Its called proper non obscene word use. You know the type of word usage one gets from a PROPER education which ....apparently you have obviously been burdened with a excess of (sarcasm). But typical pig headed degenerate response so...I expect nothing less from the type of people like yourself who do NOTHING but defer to being a biggot.
4-27-2010 @9:14AM Tess said... Digi....... I understand you're upset...... Believe me, I am upset too with the way the Gov handles things at times.... they even did it with the SugarCane industry ( I believe that was Puerto Rico ).... People in America need to start standing strong for their beliefes in the sense of boycotting and gathering in groups to voice our opinions (like the way the tea-parties are forming now here in America). Its about time ! Its about time we get together and voice our opinions and concerns about things such as the Farm land being desocrated for just biofuel, for saving a fish - instead of saving our Farms, building houses and tearing down huge trees and taking away farm land, being reliable on other countries for fuel, etc etc etc. To be honest, I dont like where we are going these days with this Gov Administration (but I didnt like other things in other Administrations either too).....I just believe that America should take care of America!! I live in Long Island...... Long Island used to be gorgeous with Farm lands all across our lands.......now we have hardly any Farm land here (just a handful) and developers tore down thousands of trees to build homes for their financial gain...... I am 52 right now, and I remember the days driving to the tip of Long Island and just seeing acres and acres of beautiful rich land full of all different types of produce....wow, do I miss those days!! I don't know how to reply to anyones Replys to me, but I would like to talk to you furhter. By the way.. don't allow yourself to get so upset over people over the internet, there are thousands of personalities here, and if ONE doesnt upset you, another one will........ YOU cant change the world; unfortunately......I wish I had an answer for you, but until the American People wake up and stop the Gov for doing things that only ruin us, then we can not fight it alone........ Fighting only is successful when done in groups......... like the tea-parties...... (( big hugs to you Digi )) I wish I can give you my personal email so we can keep in touch somehow, but I have no idea how to do it without others getting it too.

This isnt my actual email address but I can give you my actual one through that. Therefore making it obsolete for the degenerates to find use for it, plus afterwards I can delete it.
4-27-2010 @7:55PM Davey said... DIGI your such a DORK and the real joke. Must be interesting to be so intelligent in your own mind. Quite an imagination up there too. I’m old enough to be you father, and have paid into unemployment since 1969. I didn’t say getting unemployment was wrong or anyone was not welcome to use it, BUT for two and a half years? That is how long the extensions have been extended and extended, and extended, and extended. You complained about it NOT getting extended, but with your complaint about no more extensions, I THINK YOUR A CRYBABY AND PISSED BECAUSE THE TIT HAS DRIED UP
Your the POS because you sit on your ass wanting the govt to pay you for sitting around whining...waiting for the next season!!!!! Get out and find work. I DID !!
. I’m a civilian – I don’t have a gun you goon I take offense that you talk about our solders like that and I hope your stupid enough to tell a veteran the same thing.
SIR YES SIR Your winey ass would not last a week of the mortars that come in here. The news does not talk about it but we get mortar attacks 2-3 times a week most of the time after dark and in bed.. It will lull off for a couple weeks and during the winter, but now that it’s warming up, they will be sending them in. And speaking of warming up, it was 107 today here in camp Liberty. Forecast is to be warmer tomorrow and it is still springtime. Your disrespect of our service members smells of frickin Jane Fonda and Benedict Arnold
As for being over here, it is no vacation. It is more like being in a minimum security prison. Ya get a little freedom, but no where to go, nothing to do AND your away from your family and friends. I can’t even describe what it is like to be here, but I’m not gonna wine and not gonna take your flapping pie hole banter, How did you say it [Quote]“Why don’t you take your raunchy (deleted) elsewhere and bother someone who cares”[End Quote]
You assumed I was young, wet behind the ears and cower with your bullying....
Your the young know it all that doesn’t know jack S*%4. You have all your opinions from what? Your world cycles around you believing that you are important. Your not.
Your so defensive and think the world is so against you, in fact the govt was formed to make you miserable. Apple computer Co. was formed to make the ipod so you can’t have one but you’ll show them............
Just crawl back in your little snake hole
NOTE to the other readers:
I apologize to you for my part in this. I stood back a few to many times when I was young thinking it is ok because it is someone’s opinion and watched people bully others. I won’t do it anymore. You can see his quote I put in (that I see his has been removed now by a moderator) I apologize for getting off subject, not for speaking up.

I was watching TV the other day (Oprah) to be exact, and they switched Mothers from a family that doesnt think about conservation at all - to another Mother from another Family that is too extreme conservation (they were from Portland).............now I am not gonna get into the whole show - but I do know that the family from Portland only allows 5 minutes of shower time per person in the house, and that is only a few days a week....... I know that Oprah doesnt give two craps about how long she stays in a shower - she actually keeps the water running and even has more than one SHOWER HEAD in the bathroom she has constructed for herself...................to me, that's pure selfishness and NOT really in REALITY in focusing in conversing the earth (and/or environment)..... In regards to the 5 minute showers - Now I think that is a very extreme for many reasons. .........Most importantly, I beleive each female in the house needs to shower on a daily basis since their bodies are constructed whereas it needs to be kept cleaner (than their male counterparts)....... Wanna know how I shower,,, I walk into the shower, turn the water on and wet my hair and whole body (using a shower pik)- I then turn the water off, lather my body and also my hair, then turn the shower on again, and rinse off.....I then repeat. I would say that My water is on only for 5 minutes in total - but I have showered completely, didnt rush, and used as less water as I can possibly use......... So, whomever realy wants to try to save the water/earth - try adopting this shower method......... Besides, to tell you the truth, I love the lather up with my wonderful soaps and allow it to stay on my body for a few minutes before I rinse off, I actually think I am not only cleaner - but I have really given myself a calming Me-time - mini spa treatment at home............ You will be suprised how much you will like having all that lather on you for a few minutes before you actually rinse it off! .........So, stop saying you are doing many things to helop save our planet if you are not doing the most easiest thing to help conserve our water supply.

By the way,,,,,,,,, i saw a few typos in my last post -- please ignore them since Its past midnight and I am just typing without really checking for typos.................MOST IMPORTANTLY - I WANT TO SAY --- the other day I saw a program on TV, its a documentary called "dirt"........and it was about all the lands around the world that are being destroyed and cant be farmed on cause the top soil has been washed away .......... I saw Farmers selling their tractors cause they cant afford to keep their land anymore.........and I saw a poor older Farmer trying to hold back the tears -- on how he loves Farming, and so many of them out of work or losing their Farms. It brought tears to my own eyes........ I am not sure what I can do being one person - but we truly need to start to write our congressmen at least to express our concerns (even thought this administration doesnt seem to give two ****s about how we feel)... Lets all write our congressman to tell them to save our Farms, and to save our Water !! Maybe that will be the first step for us to start opening our mouths and push the GOV to do something!
