If you build it, they will come. They will; we promise. Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's tomato tower elevates one of the most straight-on, delicious combos simply by stacking it. Take one astoundingly ripe tomato (heirloom or brand-new variety; your call). Blanch it (see the recipe at blogger/photographer ulteriorpicture's post), slice it, layer it with olive oil and fresh basil leaves. Drizzle with ulteriorpicture's tomato vinaigrette to up the tomato ante. Repeat. Eat. Swoon.
A cool presentation of tomato towers might use a variety of colors and flavors: big red Early Girls, striped Green Zebras and maybe throw in some Yellow Brandywines. And, tomato fiends, here's an event you won't want to miss: The Tomatomania seedling sale is coming to Arcadia, Calif. starting today as well as to Lothian, Md; and Litchfield, Conn., in May. See the Tomatomania website to explore all the varieties available for planting.

UGH... I kill for one right now... and to slice it and layer it with basil and olive oil.... maybe a little sea salt ....

4-26-2010 @9:31PM Digi said... I agree, last I checked tomatoes were suppose to be red, unless its extremely unripe. Even blanching it wont cause it to turn orange.
4-26-2010 @9:41PM kielbasa said... Digi -- You've never heard of orange or yellow or green heirloom tomatoes? You only know about red ones??? Poor baby. you've been eating the equivalent of a Dodge Dart, while missing out on the Maseratis of the garden. You should get out more. :-)

Well you can thank the government for the grand lack of produce and food this year considering the country left places like my home state of IOWA out to dry when it came to unemployment. SO like me and a bunch of other farmers have agreed. We feed ourselves b4 the country. So while all of you are starving looking for fresh produce, beef, pork and more, we'll be sure to remember when the rest of the country said oh well to us, and eat , while the rest of you starve.
Alot of you dont realize the cancelation of unemployment EFFECTS FARMERS you tards. You know...the people who grow and raise and get your your food, each and everyday. So enjoy your old ketchup from 2008, and that hamburger thats been lockered up since last July. We're dining on Fresh Tomatoes, and sirloins. Live for yourself.....die by yourself. Just remember....when you're looking at that ONE tomatoe that costs over 6 bucks, for ONE, you all coulda changed that months ago. Bum luck dumbasses.
PS that tomatoe tower tastes like mushy crap. SO unless you dont have teeth dont waste a good tomatoe on this.

Why are you so pissed at the people??? It's the Govt that screwed you. I guess it'll be real tough for me here in Florida. I can only grow 3 gardens a year. Good luck to you Buddy... but I think you're cutting your nose off to spite your face...
4-26-2010 @9:30PM Digi said... Last I checked this was 'supposely' a Democracy, meaning its a government elected by the people 'for the people'. SInce people are so ...ignorant these days following each new fad whenever they can, complaining about their financial woes then go out and buy an Ipad, yes I will blame the American people. Its the 'people' who allowed their SOURCE OF FOOD, to go broke during the winter months when us here in the central states had a very harsh winter.
So like I said, enjoy the fact your basic selections of produce will not only be limited this year, but we're pretty certain it'll be off shelf products like dehydrated items and the likes. Its your own damn fault.
So lets just hope mexico has a good crop this year of tomatoes cause theres few places that bring them to the market. ANd well since you all wanted your Ipads instead of food...then lets see how well they taste. We're still gona be eating just fine up here. In fact you go to any grocery store up here can get REALLY nice romeo and early girl tomatoes for about 1.50-2.50 a pd. And boy are they delicious.
Oh and your garden idea, sure is a good idea, and will help YOU out. Meanwhile we have I think this coutnry retains about 1.6 billion of the world population who would starve if McDOnalds shut down. You do the math.
4-26-2010 @10:15PM Susan said... Digi-there are wonderful yellow and orange tomatoes out there and have been for years. They are not usually as acidic as the better known red. For that matter, there are great tomatoes that are a blackish purple mottled color. If I went by color alone, I'd never have tasted these delights.
4-27-2010 @1:32AM Digi said... Ojkay IM not a earloom tomatoe expert. Caught me. Normally I grow early girls, Beef steak and better boy tomatoes. Which when grown properly taste JUUUUST fine to me. Nothing I love more than eating a ripened tomatoe all by itself. However field wise we've been stuck growing a cycle of Corn (not for eating believe it or not but for ethonol usage) and soy bean alternating each year. Sadly its the highest demand of produce for the expense of growing. Theres a farm nearby that grows all sorts of goodies but lately theyve had to pretty much lett half teh land go unproductive. Sad but only getting worse.
4-26-2010 @9:52PM kimmie said... This comment is for digi , It's not the country's fault / peoples fault that these idiots would starve if thier was no more McDonalds left . It's because people are getting lazier by the sec in this world . they want everything right then and thier , no waiting or they show thier spoiled little A!!'S And if people wern't so lazy these days they would see to it that they had thier own gardens and thier own fresh produce each yr . but do you really think these idiots wanna wast thier time doing what they think is everybody elses job to get thier food ? well of course not , how rude and how dare you think they should get thier nails dirty like that . hmmmmph
Now as for myself Im disabled and I have a garden in fact i have two of them going with nice fresh tomatos , peppers , corn , squash melons greens , pumpkins just a little example of what i have out there . And I think if a disabled person can have thier garden everybody else can too .
Now as for the farmers I didnt know they was having it so rough by the people or gov or whom ever is doing it . I feel for you all that are famers because of this . But i bet if you asked around I bet alot of people had no idea that this was going on . but I think you need to just calm down a bit and take care of your own and when the market comes back up people get on thier feet better things will look up again for all the farmers and buisnesses alike . dont stress , u'll have a heart attack fresh tomatos or not lol

We have high unemployment in Northern CA where the GOVERNMENT turned off the water to save a fish.......a fish as long as your finger and used for bait.........put thousands out of work! These thousands happed to work the lush green fields that grew vegetables, including beautiful tomatoes, shipped to other states. Almond trees suffering too as this is the Almond capital. The land is now a desert!! Pity these people........other Americans did not do this to them.........they are helping to try and get the GOVERNMENT to turn the water back on. Oh, by the way, Obama did turn on the water in a couple of districts.............for two people that agreed to support his healthcare bill. Forgot about that! Now do you understand why it is the GOVERNMENT that did this to you. We are all suffering too........and NO! I refuse to eat vegetables from Mexico. They use human waste in the their fertilization and that is a proven fact! I use produce from a few local farmers and do without if they are out.

All I ever see is people complaining. This countries FULL of thinkers.....and only a few that are do'ers. Like someone pointed out already, bunch of lazy people. As long as they have their Ipad and fancy electronic toys they'll stay completely ignorant to the world around them.
People like Davey are a joke and REAL soldiers should be embarrassed this POS passed boot. Its tool slike him that make up a giant portion of the population consisting of nothing but 'thinkers' and bums. He claims Im a bum for having to claim unemployment during a bad season, JUST to get things up to par again for the coming season. Davey you really are an idiot and have NO clue whats going on...but then how can we expect you to when you're off fighting for someone elses agenda and not the American Peoples. YOu're nothing but a goon with a gun.
4-27-2010 @3:29AM RJSparling said... @ Diane - turn off the water to save a fish? Yes they did, but it isn't the entire story. The lush green farmland that is now a desert was also desert before irrigation. Farmers use water reserves to grow the produce you were talking about in a place that produce would not grow naturally. Compound that with the channeling of water to lower California for people to use. The real problem is that California (and much of the US) is following unsustainable water use policies. Groundwater levels are dropping, reservoirs are low, and natural rivers are being sucked dry before they get to their mouths. If the rivers die, the fish will become extinct and the California will have water to last another 20 years - maybe 30. FInally, though, the desert will return but the fish won't. Maybe farmers could start helping themselves by growing produce that needs less water, and adopting water saving irrigation methods. Maybe the rest of California could also start helping themselves by reducing per capita water consumption. How can you justify using aquaducts to transfer water from the mountains to southern California for private pools and watered lawns? It just seems natural that water will be a problem if you live and farm in a desert - why do species need to go extinct because of that? Of course it is hard on the people whose lives will be uprooted and destroyed, and I have tons of sympathy for them, but anyone can see what is on the horizon
