KFC Double Down Sandwich Taste Test

Rachel Been, AOL

The day has finally come for KFC's gluttonous Double Down sandwich to premier, and we were among the first in line to test it this morning (yes, we were eating this sandwich at 10:45 a.m.). The Double Down (also available with grilled chicken) consists of two boneless Original Recipe Filets, two strips of bacon, two slices of Monterey Jack and pepperjack cheese and a special Colonel's Sauce.

The complete review after the jump.

KFC's Double Down Sandwich
Grade: B
Nutritional Info: 540 calories, 32 grams fat,1380 mgs sodium
This sandwich isn't for the faint of heart. The sodium intake alone will knock you off your feet: Our testers determined the salty culprit seemed to be the breading on the chicken, though it was pleasingly crispy and the meat itself was quite moist. The bacon was legit -- it didn't have the usual weirdly chewy, artificial bacon-bit taste -- but it was essentially lost, both physically and flavor-wise (along with the cheese), between the two behemoth chicken filets. And there was a lot of discussion around whether the cheese was really a cheese spread, or if it had just melded with the special sauce.

The verdict: with a complete bite of chicken, cheese, bacon and sauce, this sandwich really isn't bad. While we probably wouldn't order another (unless you're really jonesing for a salt fix), we happily finished off the one we bought. We can foresee this becoming the new "hangover food" of choice.

Oh my, this would definitely wreck your diet!!! wow.. what will they think of next??? this is why I have decided to make my own food more..My husband and I decided to stop going out to eat during the week- especially to fast food places! We found it helped us cut the calories.. the problem was that I was doing all the cooking, while he sat on his butt. then i found this beginner's cookbook for him.. it was perfect.. hilarious, and very politically incorrect. I can't tell you the name of the book on here.. cause some of the more conservative readers will jump down my throat, but if you have a good sense of humor and are not easily offended.. google "Whipped & Beaten Culinary Works".. but seriously. .don't go if you can't take a good joke!

DOES KFC THINK THAT REMOVING THE "BREAD" WILL MAKE IT BE HEALTHIER? THATS COMPLETELY OPPOSITE, TECHNICALLY THE BREAD WAS THE HEALTHIEST ITEM FROM KFC OR ANY FASTFOOD RESTAURANT, REMOVING THE BEST PART MAKES IT THAT MUCH WORSE.

Sanders opened his first successful KFC on the corner of 7th Avenue & 119th street in Miami (it's still there & open).
This was not very far from the first Burger King as well. There was a KFC line at lunch time that wrapped around the block. It was strictly take-out. He made this gravy from the chicken juices that would blow your mind. He'd sell you a pint of the gravy & six super soft Parker House rolls. What you did is dip the rolls into the gravy. Me and his daughter are the only ones left that know how to make the gravy. The Yum Brands people don't even know what it is. Maybe some day I'll open a new kind of restaurant and feature the gravy. Right now what I'm working on is a new kind of fried chicken.
It has no coating & is fried without oil, but has a red spice mix applied. I'm talking crispy, juicy, tangy, well maybe someday you'll be able to buy it....Alfred Schrader-

Colonel Sanders sold the secret mixture of flour and spices used for breading the chicken to restaurants for 5 cents per bird. I used to see Colonel sanders driving around Lexington with the lids from KFC buckets taped in the rear windows of his Cadillac. And yes the original gravy recipe was the best I have ever eaten.

4-12-2010 @8:53PM Bill said... That is a very interesting sandwich. Yes it's loaded with Fat grams and sodium, probably a perfect fit for the low carb diets out there. For those out there that are screaming that this is the reason why American's are fat, don't blame the fast food industry. We are all human beings with a brain to think with. No one forces anyone to eat fast food and sit on our asses. Use some common sense people and eat smart and do a little exercise, quit blaming everyone else, take some responsibility for yourself and your own action.

To be fair, the version I made at home left me wanting to unclog my arteries with vinegar, but it tasted good. The event is recorded here:

Generally speaking, chicken cordon bleu is a single chicken breast, butterflied, stuffed with a slice of ham and a slice of Swiss cheese, then folded over and rolled in breadcrumbs before being baked. This monstrosity is two deep fried chicken breasts surrounding bacon, some generic "cheese" which is most likely American, and a secret sauce that's probably at least half mayo. Which one sounds more likely to clog an artery all by itself?

That said, I'd probably try it at least once. I just hop it comes with a side of defibrillator.
