Slashfood started off the morning on Monday by picking up SUBWAY's five new breakfast sandwiches: Black Forest Ham, Egg & Cheese and Steak, Western Egg & Cheese, Egg & Cheese, Double Bacon Egg & Cheese, and regular Egg & Cheese. The new breakfast menu also features healthier sides like yogurt and apple slices.
"In the end, though, it is the customers that create the best sandwiches with the choices they make with toppings, sauces, cheeses, breads and condiments. Our breakfast will be no different," SUBWAY Executive Chef, Chris Martone said in a press release today. Besides the five breakfast sandwiches, customers can create their own: egg or egg white, American or Cheddar cheese, ham and/or bacon, and up to eight fruit and vegetable toppings on a wheat English muffin, sub roll or flatbread.
Our testers were not as enthusiastic about the sandwiches as Martone.
The complete review after the jump.

My family has been in the Subway business for 25 years, and we take great pride in the Subway brand. Not all Subways are created equal, and that's because of ownership/management. Some of you have cited reasons that you dislike Subway. If you were to walk into my restaurant, those reasons would be nonexistent. Let's face it...managers come and go in all types of businesses. Some are better than others. But just because you've had one bad experience, doesn't mean that your experience applies to the entire brand as a whole. I'm willing to bet that the editor of this article purchased their breakfast sandwiches from the same restaurant. If that restaurant was poorly run/managed, it's easy to see why they may have had unfavorable opinions. I for one will tell you that none of the breakfast muffin melts from one of my restaurants look anything as poor as the ones pictured in this article. It's clear to me that the sandwiches were made incorrectly according to our formulas and builds. For example, there's way too much steak on that sandwich, unless extra steak was requested. The presentation is just horrid. For anyone out there without a one-track judgmental mind, please realize that Subway's breakfast offerings aren't indicative of the portrayals in this article by any stretch of the imagination.
One thing that really discredits the editor's article to me is that the names of the sandwiches are butchered! Additionally, only the 'Breakfast Muffin Melts" (served on Light Wheat English Muffins) are shown in this article. Just to inform those that are unaware, the Breakfast Melts are not the only breakfast offering at Subway. Here's a better explanation for you:
1) You start by choosing the type of sandwich you'd like:
Egg & Cheese
Black Forest Ham & Cheese
Western & Cheese
Double Bacon & Cheese
Steak & Cheese
*(additional options are available in different areas/markets)
2) You choose the type of bread you'd like, as well as the size:
English Muffin Melt (on Light Wheat English Muffin)
Flatbread
6" or 12" (Footlong) on ANY Subway bread
3) You have the choice of the following Omelets:
Regular Egg Omelet
Egg White Omelet (healthier option)
4) You can add any type of cheese you'd like
5) The breakfast offerings are meant to be TOASTED
6) You can add any vegetables/sauces/condiments if you desire
As you can see, you have MANY options to choose from, varying in terms of size, taste preference, and health factors. It's UP TO YOU....but the options are there for ANY appetite or health preference.
Also, Subway's ENTIRE MENU is available during breakfast hours as well. You are not limited to merely the breakfast offerings. Some stores offer additional side options such as Hash Browns, Croissants, and Muffins. It all varies by market. Additonally, Apple Slices, Dannon Light & Fit Yogurt, Orange Juice, 1% Milk, and Seattle's Best premium blend Coffee are available as sides to your breakfast options.
For those wondering the healthier aspects of the breakfast menu:
1) There are 4 Breakfast Muffin Melts (the light wheat english muffin sandwiches) available with 4.5g of fat or less, and 200 calories or less. Those options are made with the Egg White Omelet. You can go to subway.com for ALL the breakfast sandwich offering nutrition information.
Subway Breakfast will be offered in over 20,000 of about 23,000 U.S. restaurant locations. All stores will be opening from 7am on Monday thru Friday. Weekend times will vary by store, but are traditionally 8am or earlier on Saturdays and 9am or earlier on Sundays.
For those of you claiming that Subway's meats are paper thin and of the lowest quality, I'd like you to cite where you're getting your information from. You clearly have no idea what you're referring to, and your claims are highly unsubstantiated.
Many people will make bogus claims about the brand to experiences they had. Some will be substantiated, and some unsubstantiated. But that doesn't represent ALL restaurants or the brand and it's offerings. Please, don't speak negatively about a brand just because of one experience. There are many other positive experiences that are had daily, and one restaurant is not representative of an entire chain.

The egg patties that most places use are just awful. If they don't crack eggs, I don't want it.

Personally the Western Egg and Cheese on the muffin is pretty good, use the egg whites i have them add a touch of pepper to add to the flavor but for 2 bucks its a pretty good and holds me out until lunch without killing all your calories in a shot and at 120 less calories then an egg McMuffin and 465 less then the steak and egg bagel its far more better for you

I have to say to see real ingred in my sandwhich was pleasing but the pre cooked egg whites turned me off and I read that someone said McDonalds eggs are fresh to order? Are you kidding me? It comes in a slab and they cut it into pre cut egg circles and D and D's eggs gag me and so does another place. If I want REAL eggs I will cook them myself or go to a diner...in Jersey we have one every other street light ;)
