Student Redesigns Coke Bottle

When Andrew Kim, 18, a student at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, got an assignment to create an eco-friendly product he thought about Coke bottles. At first Kim considered the idea of reusing the bottle in some way but then struck on the concept of redesigning the bottle instead. "I thought about fixing the problem instead of using the problem," he explained to Slashfood. "We have all these bottles and they are not being recycled."

Kim's first innovation was to make the bottles rectangular to facilitate packing and shipping: "All shipping uses rectangular forms so I wanted to use that space to maximum capability," he explained. Kim also suggested that the bottles be nested in shipping and in turn be collapsible when empty so more of them can be sent to be recycled.

Kim, who doesn't drink Coke, thought of redesigning the classic contoured soda bottle because, "everyone else drinks Coke."

Oh and in case you were wondering Kim got a perfect score of 100 for his assignment.

Yea, but this kid is going to be SCREWED RIGHT INTO THE GROUND by ALL of the bottle manufacturers because it is a VERY INTELLIGENT SOLUTION to a MAJOR problem THAT THESE COMPANIES PAY MILLIONS TO AD AGENCIES AND OTHER ENTITIES FOR and now they will JUST STEAL HIS IDEA AND NOT PAY HIM A DIME!!!!!!! I remember many years ago when we would have "HUNTERS" from the then BIG THREE AUTO INDUSTY GIANTS come to our school and make a cheap donation so they could have ALL OF THE BRAINY IDEAS OF THE YOUNG PEOPLE to come up with new designs for their cars, under the guise of a "study period afternoon". We enjoyed the free time, they stole the ideas of the few who actually had an idea. Remember this: IF YOU EVER WANT TO SOLVE AN ADULT/COMPLEX PROBLEM LOOK AT IT IN THE EYES OF A CHILD/YOUTH. The premise is that the child/youth has not learned to be so analytical that they compound problems. IT WORKS!!! IT WORKS VERY WELL!!!

Soda companies would HAVE to buy his design or risk being outed and completely humiliated for such an action and none of these companies can afford something like that nowadays. It also doesn't say whether or not he copyrighted the design, that sure would be a smart thing to do though.

Case-in-point, Fiji Water seems to be sustaining a square bottle design. Perhaps the design may need adjusting to add a softer, rounder feel to the hand, but "poor design." Really? Furthermore, the spout is off-center which would eliminate some of the liquid surge that typically happens at the "shoulders" of the square bottles. Good design. To say square bottles won't sell and this is a poor design is already disproved with existing products that do sell.

The problem is that the sodas are bottle regionally.

The square, bottle like, container is a super idea but if it is collapseable and made out of plastic how in the world do you sterilize if for re-use. A better choice would be plastic that is biodegradable. Coke could still have its famous shape in the form of a graphic on all four sides of the container and so could the other makers of sodas.

For the STUPID ASSES KNOWN AS "BOB" AND "JIMMY JOE", and I REPEAT -- "STUPID ASSES" -- I did NOT say that I personally had any ideas that were worthy of the task that the manufacturers wanted. LEARN TO READ YOU MORONS!!!! AND THEN LEARN TO READ EVERY, REPEAT, EVERY WORD and HAVE SOMEONE EXPLAIN WHAT WAS WRITTEN TO YOU, SINCE YOU HAVE NO ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE VALUE OF WORDING. I said, "... ideas of the FEW who actually HAD AN IDEA." This does NOT, by any means, say that I had anything to share that they wanted. Again, since you're SO STUPID, I MENTION THIS -- MORONS!!!

4-06-2010 @12:01PM Jimmy Joe said... Sorry King D. I thought you were saying that the Big 3 knew that nobody can design a better car than a bunch of 7th grader's. OH WAIT, you were saying that. Yeah, I' m the MORON. ha ha ha

The Coke Bottle hourglass has been a large part of the brand for over 100 years. Sorry, though it's greener and I hate to sound like I don't care about recycling and the envoirnment, because I do, but to add this style of a Coke bottle to my collection....no. When I saw the image I have to admit my first reaction was "WTF?!" Perhaps the student isn't aware as to how us Coke lovers are kinda loyal like that... we dont' like change! (Remember the "New Coke"? Yea. The "New Bottle" would be just as well received, I'm willing to bet...)

I don't see it happening. Also, do these bottles keep the fizz?? I know the plastic bottles don't keep soda as "crisp" as the old thick glass bottles used to. (Brain freeze soda burps rock!)

I also have to agree to the level of change this new design would cause as far as cup holders and the likes. Sure, it's a great idea from someone young and ideological, however in the big picture this is something if implemented on a grand scale would cost tons of money in conversions and a long time to slowly execute.

4-06-2010 @12:51PM King David said... No, Jimmy Joe THE MORON, that is NOT what I said at all!!! As usual you, being of a certain LIMITED "INTELLIGENCE" ASSUME THAT WHAT YOU BELIEVE IS WHAT IS WRITTEN!!! I only commented on WHAT I KNEW, saying NOTHING about 7th graders. While the premise to this story may have been that, WHAT I WROTE was a recollection of the typical actions of many of the "hunters" who used to come to PRIVATE SCHOOLS -- WHERE WE STUDENTS HAVE A HIGHER IQ (have someone explain what those letters mean) than other students. It was common conduct in those days (before the computers and Internet -- devices that allows STUPID ASSED PEOPLE YOU A VEHICLE TO VARIOUS FORUMS THAT YOU HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE ABOUT). AGAIN, LEARN TO READ and also have someone explain the intent of the "Remember this" portion of my original post as I AM POSITIVE IT IS WAAAAAAAAAAYYY TOO FAR ABOVE YOUR ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE PREMISE. MORON!!!

It may be cool, the design may ship well and can be easily exhibited in stores, but has anyone thought about how the human hand will hold it? Square? Great design for business, poor design for your hand.

4-06-2010 @3:12PM MandiP said... It is a great design from the design standpoint. As far as a consumer holding it, or able to drink it straight from the bottle instead of pouring it into another receptacle, it falls flat. Some designs are wonderful to look at , beautiful to see but not practical to physically use.

John in RVA

4-06-2010 @4:57PM John in RVA said... Some have said that this already has been done. I know that it's already been done with "still" liquids like chicken/beef/vegetable stocks. But, I would ask if it has been done with highly pressurized carbonated beverages? Any flat-sided "carton," under carbonation pressure will bulge a lot unless the sides are so thick, or so heavily reinforced, that they become uneconomically thick. That's one of the reasons that round flimsy cans are so popular...they're strong for their weight when pressurized. But, then, I may be so "of the old school" that I can't appreciate the innovation. LOL.
