Hoffman Media
The quarterly created by Jamie and Bobby Deen and published by Hoffman Media just launched its first issue -- which features almost 100 recipes. And while Deen Bros. Good Cooking aims to get men into the kitchen, it also wants to bring families together around the dinner table.
"The recession can have some positive effects," Jamie Deen, 42, told Slashfood. "It's going to force people to not go out and eat fast food. We think eating at home is one of the first changes. Get everybody's feet back under the same table."
In that vein, the magazine he co-founded with his brother Bobby, 39, offers a series of simple recipes made with affordable, easy-to-find ingredients – like cheese and beer dip, Creole shrimp, pesto sirloin steak, shrimp and mushroom pasta, tilapia piccata and a grilled banana dessert.
"We're just showing people easy ways to cook good food that's good for you," Deen said. "We keep it real simple." By highlighting the basics and avoiding anything too complicated or fancy, Paula's boys hope to attract regular folks "who appreciate the story of our family," Deen explained. "We're just ordinary people," he said.
Some of the magazine's fare is designed to be tempting to guys, he added, though it isn't for men only. "It's got a lot of grilling and outdoor things," Deen said. "We've got a real spicy pepper Jack burger that will really appeal to men. It's kind of opening it up to men, showing them what Bobby and I like to do (so they can) share with their girlfriends and wives."
It's perfect for bachelors, too, he said. What woman doesn't love a man who can cook?
"A single guy that can prepare a good meal -- that's a good trick to have up your sleeve," Deen said. "There's nothing more manly than taking a role in the traditional day-to-day responsibilities that a typical stay-at-home mom handles ... Cooking has such an effect on women."

A Chef doesn't create much of anything. They cook (much like a cook) they just get to use the elitist term "chef" and have their name embroidered on a white jacket because they’ve been professionally trained. For that very reason cooks should be applauded. They do the exact same tasks but are self or home taught.

The best food in the whole world does not need to look like fancy artwork in a painting as some professional Chef's create. It just needs to taste good and make you feel satisfied. Alot of times you just can not cook something and make it taste good with out using butter or salt! I love Paula and she is a great cook. I have used a couple of her recipes and they were really good. I will never attempt her banana, ham, cheese & bacon casserole. EWW! Love Jaime & Bobby too. If I was not married, Bobby could cook me a pile of dirt and I would love it! Lol!

There are no education requirements to get the title, although there are certifying entities (such as the ACF) who have their own criteria to determine who should have the title. There are plenty of culinary school graduates who never earn the title chef just as there are plenty of chefs who have no formal training.
4-28-2010 @11:11PM JS said... Just an addendum. I should have actually said a chef is someone who runs a professional kitchen...not just any kitchen. For instance, the Roux brothers, the greatest chef's since Escoffier worked as personal chefs for a good long while. In other words, the title chef implies getting paid to run the kitchen. Mom doesn't get her chef's cred for bossing big sis around in the kitchen on Thanksgiving.

Maybe they could learn to be a chef or cook, like the Deens who have made a pretty good living at it.... Butter or not
