Musher Plans to Munch on Hot Tamales

More than five dozen Mississippi hot tamales have been secreted away in the snows of northwest Alaska.

The tamales from Solly's, a Vicksburg institution, were recently shipped to musher Mike Suprenant, who plans to participate in next week's 1,150-mile Iditarod race. Since it's impossible for a team of 16 huskies to efficiently drag the 2,000 pounds of food needed to keep them and their driver fed, organizers require racers to stow their supplies at food drops, reachable only by helicopters and sleds.

Dogs typically feast on a fine-tuned chow of moose steak, lamb trimmings, chicken skin and seal oil, but mushers are free to eat whatever they choose. Jewel McCain, owner of Solly's, surmises her tamales' cayenne-driven spices and high fat content will help keep Suprenant warm.

"They're loaded with lots of good stuff that's all bad for you," McCain laughs. (McCain shared her kitchen secrets with Southern Foodways Alliance's oral historian, Amy Evans, in 2006: "We don't add anything special other than the grease -- Papa's liquid gold, as [Henry Solly] called it -- rendered beef fat.")

McCain isn't sure how Suprenant acquired his taste for Solly's tamales, although she concedes, "We have people from practically all over the world." His order was conveyed by a Vicksburg resident and longtime Iditarod volunteer.

"I took care of it, and I actually added a few," McCain says.

Until Suprenant placed his order, McCain had shipped to every state but Alaska.

"They're up there frozen now," she says.

That forces an assumption someone sent poisoned or rotton food to them. NOT TAMALIES. Im sick of it and refuse to read or post on your sexest female editor only website.....WHy dont you try to become real journalists and go find legit stories instead of making them up?

If it's not that, then when you get to the bottom of the story to see what people's reaction is to a supposed big news story, the comment section is still temporarily closed going on 5 months. I have wised up, when I see who's story it is I bypass it. I don't mind reading propaganda, but I like to see what people have to say about it. One sided stories just aren't worth reading.

OH and btw, your editor Sarah, while easily the cutest of the group, needs to tone down her smile a bit, I mean good god she looks like shes applying to be the first female joker. I never thought Id be so ...uncomfortable from a smile but it looks like shes intentionally trying to show every tooth she has.

Just a PR suggestion....you dont want readers spooked by an editor do you?

On other articles I have been attempting to instigate a sort of 'boycott' of these websites (walletpop, lemondrop, slashfood, etc) by only posting comments expressing my disgust over the ridiculious amounts of spam that goes on in these commentary. Id rather personally see someone post who disagrees with me more rather than someone whos not even being relevant or worse advertising some prefabricated statement which they use over and over making it obvious these people cruise the same articles as us.

Sad to say like in another post, somoene pointed out that the spam ads seem to almost always be first on the commentary making it almost obvious they are either endorsed by the website or ignored by them, perhaps even 'paid off'.

I think if enough people (sure not everyones gona complain because lots of people are even discouraged from commenting DUE to the obscene amounts of ads) complain/comment/or 'boycott' such sites I think ..truely believe it will force action.

Ive taken personal interest in this and am attempting any method i can to force the issue. If more people thought like you and I, it would be an easy task. And its not that people dont think like this, its more people are discouraged because well if a site lets it go on in the first place whats to convince them to stop?

Lets cause some waves and rock this boat I say. So from now on my comments are only gona be relevant to this distasteful ignorance they demonstrate by allowing such things to continue without opposition. I suggest to everyone else who feels teh same, to do the same ro something equivelant. Write in, make your voice heard, MAKE THEM LISTEN or suffer the consequencies of losing readers. They depend on legit advertising to succeed, so if not to them write to the legitament advertises expressing your disgust, and combine them int eh same attitude as you do with the spammers forcing their financial hands to step in. Someone will hear us, and someone in a position fo power will see this .........blantant act of forceful advertising wont be tolerated any longer.

We are going to have to act, if we are to live in a better world.

For the record, I did note in a WalletPop story that the first time I visited, the first five or so posts were SPAM ads; when I confirmed my comment some time later, I was taken back to the story and those posts were gone. I agree, the News comment experience has been down way too long.
On this article, I only saw the current headline, which seems fine to me.
Good luck in the Iditarod, MIke Suprenant, other mushers, and dogs, all!

I can say this because I've done it. Usually after I've gotten so excited/insensed by a Slashfood posting.

But yes SEVERAL times I have posted and gotten the 'please comfirm to get you comment posted' to ultimately never recieve that comfirmation email.

My guess its their futile attempt to solve a greater problem (sorta like that of facebook that uses scrambled letters before you can comfirm), but also a very lazy attempt. Especially considering most these ads are placed on by half bot/person combos who can easily comfirm their ads after mass posting.

Its all quite sad and relatively insulting because ultimately this makes me feel the website admins and involved people couldnt care less about the enjoyment of its readers. Sadly however comercials and ads seem to rule the days as of late and only seems to get worse. From lawyers sueing for freedome of speech to place billboards next to schools to having to watch a comercial before watching a movie preview (which I find rather ...idiotically hilarious......go to IMDB and watch any preview you'll know what Im talking about).

But then people NEED TO ACT if they are not only going to respond but alter their ........policies. Write massive letters, even handwrite them and send them to teh execs that dont even visit their own websites. Action is the only way to get results.

Try taking two young children out to eat at a restaurant, its almost horrifying lol. I found a place that provides me with all the "secret" recipes of restaurants like Applebees, Carrabba's, Cheesecake Factory, Chick-Fil-A (for the kids) and many more.
Not only can we save money by cooking at home but we enjoy the great food of eating out. No more packing up the car, being embarrassed by temper tantrums (The kids and my wife’s :) or waiting in long lines.
I suggest you give these recipes a look if you love eating out. http://tinyurl.com/secretrecipies
