BK's A.1. Steakhouse XT Burger Tested

Rachel Been, AOL

Yesterday, Slashfood announced that Burger King had unveiled its new Steakhouse XT Burger line. Today, we got our hands around one and taste-tested the "premium" burger, A.1. Steakhouse XT. The massive thing weighs in at 7 ounces, which is 30% more beef than those of McDonald's Angus Third Pounders. It's topped with crispy fried onions, two slices of American cheese and A.1. Steak Sauce.

The complete review after the jump.

A.1. Steakhouse XT
Grade: C+
Burger connoisseurs will be disappointed with this behemoth patty. The texture of the meat resembled meatloaf (and not in a good way) -- it was over-handled, overly compacted and flavorless. Crunchy (not soggy) fried onions sort of made up for the bland beef. The A.1. Steak Sauce mixed with mayo was way too sweet for our testers, however. The bottom of the cornmeal-dusted bun really isn't up to the task of supporting the weight of the patty and quickly becomes an obsolete, mushy mess.

While our obsession for crunchy fried onions was satisfied, we won't be ordering another anytime soon -- we'll stick with the original Whopper.

So now people do have a choice of getting a little taste without getting the whole enchilada. You can't just pin it 100% on the fast food joints. In my books other factors like the breakdown of the traditional family, maligned parenting, convenience, low cost, lifestyle, career focus, go-go-go mentality, etc have a greater bearing over the state of things...

There are such things as gluten-free buns, but I have not heard of a fast food chain that serves them. About one out of 150 of us have celiac disease, but most do not know it!

They also have a condiment bar with ketchup, salt, pepper and so on. You can only add so much before it isn't a burger any more

I remember as a teenager just walking up to Burker King the air was
filled with a sizzling aroma of an open fired grill. the hamburger
was flamed cooked and was hot when served. The color was appealing
also. Like the pictures on their window. It is hard to believe how
consistently bad the product is now. I really do not know where the
meat comes from. It has absolutely no resemblance to beef. The
texture is really gross and one might wonder what combination of cuts
produces this. It seems to me based on my observation at stores where
you can actually see into the work area that once the customer orders
a hamburger, a hamburger is pulled out of a plastic container and
microwaved, When you look at it , it looks all grey and sweaty and
has absolutely no taste to it at all. It is truly gross. I am
unfortunately addicted to fast food. Anyone under 40 may not have any
idea of how good their hamburgers used to be. I am ashamed to
support this type of product. The people at Burger King are hard
workers and I glad to support them though.

This monstrosity is 770 calories according to the BK website...like about half to a third of the average woman's daily caloric intake if she's sedentary to moderately active. Why should I spend half my daily calories on this piece of not very great nutrition? Actually, here's the whole scoop, if it copies smoothly: 770 calories, 17g sat. fat, 115mg cholesterol,10g sugar, 53g carbs, 46g fat, 0.5g trans fat, 36g protein,1390 mg sodium.

Not exactly your nutritional bargain!

It is not about "Fast Food" or saying any thing bad about BK, it just makes common sense. If I am allowed 2000 calories per day then maybe I should not eat something that contains 770 calories for lunch. I would be almost half way to my total coloric intake for the day if I ate that thing. Finally, just for chuckles, I am 68 years old and in good health. I am not overweight nor am I diabetic and my wife and eat lunch every day at a fast food restaurant. Remember, everything in moderation.

I grew up in Miami, FL and share Bill's recollections. I was amazed, as he was, when I saw my "flame-broiled" patty being pulled from a plastic bin and dropped on a bun. What a far cry from the real deal that actually set BK apart from just another fast-food burger joint. I call their customer survey line ((866)-425-4745 each and every time I buy food there. What's happened to BK is what happens to ANY good restaurant, even fast-food, when bean counters and efficiency experts are allowed free hand and total control of the final product.
The XT Burger? Its taste reminds me of those cardboard doggie-burgers we were served in elementary school. NEVER AGAIN!

I used to like the Double Whopper w/cheese, but that was when I would ask for 1/2 the condiments and would get it. I've requested this numerous times and only got it once. Three strikes and YOU'RE OUT BK!

That is, unless you have been conditioned to like the smell of rancid grease and trash receptacles which are never fully cleaned out so they smell of rotten food. Those of you enjoying these places have clearly never learned to appreciate real food. What a shame. You can go all you like and sing their praises if you choose, but you're only convincing yourselves. These stores, nearly every one of them, reek of foul smells. Ummmm....rancid oil and rotten food...ummmm. Y'all are just clueless.
