Though I have never tried it, it is probably possible to use the cookie cutter as a mold to pour your pancake into. Also can use the cookie cutters with sandwiches. It totally eliminates the "I don't like crusts" crisis, plus the leftovers make a snack for mom or dad. As for the negative feedback on using food coloring in your pancakes...that is nonsense! Food coloring is in EVERYTHING you eat, (including meat). Do you really think that meat is THAT red? It is in EVERY cake batter, candy, etc. It is even included in some vegetables! Food coloring is non-toxic, and so, a little would go a long way in this recipe. I made green eggs and ham for my son when he was younger. He still has fond memories of that breakfast. When I made toaster streudels I would use the icing to make pictures or messages on them after they came out of the toaster. Usually they related to something popular in his life at that time. It was fun. That's what breakfast should be, FUN!

How many artificial colors have been banned - and the ones that are currently on the market probably just haven't gone through enough trials ban them yet. Eat natural food folks!

It's fun, it's cute and yes, kids will love them. There are endless numbers of hazards in this world -- and 7 pancakes with artificial coloring isn't among the worst of them.

David even once in a while is too often for "poisonous" chemicals but feeding your kids non toxic food coloring on occasion is okay. Some of you people need to lighten up though. Do you let your kids eat icing covered cupcakes, M&M's, etc. Food coloring is everywhere so why not in pancakes. My only issue is having to dirty 7 different bowls trying to mix the different colors.
2-21-2010 @9:51AM Lisa said... Wow. My mom would have never given us food coloring filled pancakes. But she did make them shaped like little teddy bears - with ears, a head, arms, body and legs. She also made "baby pancakes" for us - they were maybe an inch around. Both the "bears" and "babies" were exciting. You don't need to fill your kids food with chemicals. Just be creative.

And there are still doubts as to why diabetes is the largest growing health concern for young people in the US? This is irresponsible presentation. Perhaps a swirl of colors in one or two pancakes would be a wiser choice and a better display of what to feed children! Better yet, fresh fruit comes in ALL colors and a rainbow of them would surely be a healthy improvement for breakfast choices!

2-21-2010 @12:38PM Inkling said... So, Barb, you STILL think that diabetes is related to carbs and fat? I guess you never considered it might be related to all the unhealthy things that meat producers give their animals prior to slaughter. They give them steroids to plump them up fast so they can get them to market quicker. What do you suppose that does to the human that eats that beef, chicken, pork, or eats their eggs, or drinks the milk or cheese that is made from it??? We are what we eat, and we are what THEY eat too. Our vegetables are tainted with pesticides too. You can wash it off the outside, (maybe...), but it still gets fed into the plants through their roots. Everytime you think you are eating healthy by eating veggies, you are still eating pesticides unless the veggies are organic. I'm not a vegan...I don't eat organic. I'm just stating a fact.

My mom was so strict when I was young that she wouldn't even let me get mint chocolate chip ice cream at the Baskin Robbins, because she was uncomfortable with the green food dye in it. I was always so disappointed. She had tons of food restriction rules, and they didn't kill me. In fact we were very healthy kids at a great weight. Once I was on my own, I really let loose though, and to this day love to have junk food in my home although I try not to eat too much of it. But it does make me happy just to have it in the pantry if I want to indulge. So her overly strict control over my diet did cause some long lasting feelings in me, but I always try to keep a healthy balance.
I also think a lot of kids these days are coddled to the point of ridiculousness by their parents and are overly picky about what they will and will not eat. My best friend has 2 kids who will barely eat anything and even what they will eat has to be from their favorite restaurant or prepared "just so" or they won't eat it. For example: They love chicken fingers, but will only eat certain brands or certain restaurants chicken fingers. It gets annoying, how picky they are and she caters to them instead of letting them miss the occasional meal if they won't eat what the rest of us are having. It is SO ANNOYING. There are times she will stop to pick up food for them and then bring it to whatever restaurant we are meeting at for lunch. I just can't believe the level of catering these kids get. I say, eat what I give you or go without. They should expand their horizons, as well as be grateful they get to eat out at all. And these kids aren't little ones anymore. We are talking 10 and 12.
She says she believes in picking her battles, and that her mother made her eat things she didn't like and she hated that and swore she would never do that to her kids, hence the dietary catering to them. So again, another person whose food choices are somewhat dictated by her childhood food issues, and of course, those were dictated by Mom too! Interesting stuff, I think. (Moms get blamed for everything in the end, don't they?) :-) We complain ours were too strict and made us eat whatever they cooked, and our kids will complain they have weight issues because their mother always let them eat anything. Can't win! Serve healthy, well balanced, tasty meal, to help our kids develop lifelong good eating habits. That is the goal we should always reach for.
