One of the flavorings used to give a smoky flavor to meats and cheeses (in lieu of traditional smoking) may be hazardous to your health, Food Safety News reported.
The European Food Safety Authority examined 11 smoke flavorings used in the European Union and found that several of the flavorings had chemicals in them that could cause cell damage in high quantities. "EFSA assessed eleven different smoke flavorings and found that, for eight of them, possible human intake levels were too close to levels beyond which adverse health effects may occur in animal experiments," EFSA spokesman Andrew Cutting told Slashfood in an email.
"For one of those eight flavorings, EFSA could not rule out possible concerns over genotoxicity (i.e. damage to the genetic material of cells) on the basis of the data which were available."
A spokesperson for the Food and Drink Federation, a food-industry group, said it will evaluate the panel's findings, FSN reported.
"We shall be working with FSA and the European Commission in the coming weeks to consider how smoke flavorings may continue to be used safely, noting EFSA's previous statements in respect to smoke flavorings that their safety is relatively high compared to traditional smoking methods," the spokesperson said.
The European Commission told FSN it plans to create a list of safe smoke-flavoring products.

I've become rather fond of the smoky flavor of certain foods, but I'm so glad that another study has been conducted that shows still another food item that I like has been found to be bad for me. Since hearing this news, I have chosen to vomit six times per day, and enjoy a good enema every 2 hours to rid my body of all the dreadful toxins I have foolishly ingested. I'm considering fasting for the next 3 years or until the researchers can come up with a study that lists foods that will not harm me. What would we stupid people do without these learned scholars?
