Anyone who's ever tried to eat French fries in the car or has squeezed packet after messy packet of ketchup onto a burger knows that those little condiment packages can be annoying (and sometimes impossible to open at all).
Heinz feels our pain. For the first time in decades, the ketchup company is revamping the way it packages ketchup on-the-go, the Associated Press reported.
Heinz has created the Dip & Squeeze package, a single-serving ketchup packet that has a cup for dipping and an end that can be torn off, making it easier to both dip and squeeze with less mess.
"The packet has long been the bane of our consumers," David Ciesinski, vice president of Heinz Ketchup, told the AP. "The biggest complaint is there is no way to dip and eat it on the go."
The packet also holds three times as much ketchup as the traditional Heinz ketchup packet.
"From dipping nuggets and fries to squeezing ketchup on hamburgers or eggs, the Heinz Dip & Squeeze product gives consumers more flexibility, so they can have fun and enjoy eating Heinz Ketchup on whatever, wherever they want," Ciesinski said in a statement.
Heinz, which sells more than 11 million ketchup packets a year, will continue to sell its traditional foil packets as well, ABC News reported. The new packaging is getting a road test in the Midwest and Southwest this summer and is expected to be available in fast-food restaurants this fall.
In addition to updating the ketchup packet, Heinz is reducing the sodium content of its core line of ketchup products by 15 percent. It's also launching Simply Heinz Tomato Ketchup, which uses sugar in place of high-fructose corn sweetener.

2-04-2010 @4:24PM jperonto said... YAY! I've always loved whataburger for its ketchup containers. I have never been able to use ketchup at fast food restaurants like I can with bbq, honey mustard, etc. Finally! And the serving isn't so skimpy now so that's a great plus!

Not to mention, it was designed so it will be easier to use in the car??!?! They spent two years in a minivan to design it?!? Where are we really going with this folks? There MUST be something more important to worry about......

Honestly, I am simply an observer of both the path America seems to be on and the result we seem to desire as dependents of the FDA, USDA and EPA where diet and the food industry are concerned. If you choose not to: a) not provide yourself and your family with the best food possible regardless of cost (yes, this would include growing much of your own food...), b) Educate yourself as to the source of EVERY ingredient you eat, knowing both source and manufacturing process if any, and finally c) Insist on organic unprocessed ingredients whenever possible as a result of your education....well then more power to you. Even during the hardest of times, an animal in the wild will choose the best food available, not the cheapest. Maybe we can learn something there as well. We're not here for convenient ketchup.....
2-04-2010 @8:30PM AndresM said... I can't imagine a more wasteful way to do this. Look at the box in the video (30 secs in)! you can fit 3 packs in the space of just one of those. This means not only more plastic plastic plastic, more card board for shipping, but also this means more overall ketchup waste.

2-06-2010 @4:26PM Raiders757 said... I've never had an issue with the regular packets, ever. To be exact, they come in handy when sitting in a car, eating fries. I can tear the top off just right and dip my fries right into the packet two at a time. This new one looks as if that isn't possible. That's not a big issue anyway, but it was so clean and neat with the old packets and there was no worry of spilling ketchup on anything in the car.
