Fried Butter and Doughnut Burgers - Welcome to the Florida State Fair

Florida State Fair

If you've got a pair of elasticized maternity jeans in the back of the closet, let them see the light of day. If you've got a sweatshirt that's miles too big, drag that out too. The Florida State Fair has begun.

This year, the fair (February 4-15, in Tampa) is proud to introduce several new snacks for your dining pleasure. While you wander through Cracker Country (it's not a salute to Ritz crackers), munch on some "fair squares," which are described as deep-fried foods that "resemble beignets with pink powdered sugar topping."

Or indulge in some deep-fried butter -- literally, butter balls wrapped in dough and deep-fried, dipping flavors optional -- as you watch the Elvis impersonator national finals. There's also the "Over the Top Krispy Kreme Doughnut Burger," which is composed of a burger patty placed between two Krispy Kreme doughnuts, with a choice of toppings.

If those choices are too intense, there are tamer options available, like ice cream that looks like spaghetti or bacon-flavored lip balm.

Paul Wilson, the media relations contact for the fair, sees these foods as "kind of a novelty and an entertainment part of the fair. He continues, "I don't think it's a bad thing. The Florida State Fair is the first state fair of the year, and we have a lot of featured vendors who want to show off their stuff."

He also adds that you don't have to ingest anything -- you can just live vicariously through fellow fair-goers.

Incongruously, the logo for this year's fair is a dashing trio of superheroes clad in tight-fitting suits, with the main hero sporting six-pack abs and a large bucket of French fries emblazoned on his chest. But we're pretty sure he isn't scarfing down a serving of deep-fried chocolate bacon.

Burgers, fries, chips, donuts, pies.......and some do offer salads now for the one person that wants them out of every thousand. More educational material to read then ever before......but America is fatter and more disgusting then ever.

It refers to the pioneers of Florida who were called Crackers. They were dubbed this because they herded cattle through Florida's scrubland and their cow whips made a "cracking" noise. People who are Florida natives and have generations rooted in the state are called "Florida Crackers" and I'm proud to be one myself. Make sure you know what you're talking about before you embarrass yourself &/or make fun of something.

Floridian pioneers in the 19th century got this name because they were cattle herders and their bull whips made a cracking noise. You have no idea what you're talking about. I myself am proud to be a Florida Cracker. The section of the fair known as Cracker Country is an old timey section that celebrates the state's history.
