Budweiser Launches 55 Calorie Beer

Anheuser-Busch

by Joshua M. Bernstein

With mountains of deep-fried chicken wings and enough guacamole to turn you green, the Super Bowl is the day when diets die a cholesterol-choked death.

But while your waist may balloon, who says you need to sport a matching beer belly too? This week marks the release of Anheuser-Busch's Select 55, a light beer that's barely more caloric -- and flavorful -- than water.

Clocking in at a slender 55 calories and 1.9 grams of carbs per 12-ounce bottle, Select is the self-professed "world's lightest beer," a statement that's as enticing as "the world's tastiest rice cake."

Truth is, no craft-beer convert would dare be caught within 100 yards of this fizzy diet beverage. To this jaded drinker, Select 55 seems like another blind grasp at rapidly disappearing market share -- beer sales sunk another 2.2 percent in 2009.

Here's a tip, Anheuser-Busch: If you want to regain your money-earning mojo, focus less on hail-mary gimmicks and start brewing beer that, you know, actually tastes good. A touchdown for our taste buds is a win-win for everyone.

which would be good as far as driving.

Having a huge get together with so much fattening but delicious food.. that would be a good place to shave calories. I got some great ideas for throwing a fabulous Super Bowl party here: http://www.celebrationideasonline.com/super-bowl-party.html Great games, pools, decorations and recipes.. but not a mention of diet beer

I use to drink Mich Ultra & Bud Select 55 tastes very close to that. If you are use to drinkng a certain beer it will take a little while to get use to the change.

As much as they desperately try not to admit it, Anheuser-Bush makes the majority of their beers with rice, and as little of the other ingredients as possible.

Sorry folks! It doesn't get any more American than a European-owned Sake company!!!

There is a reason that Bud and Bud products are ranked in the lowest one percentile of all beer in the world, and that is because it is awful, and it doesn't taste like beer.

And to those arguing which "American Style Light Lager" (Miller, Bud, Coors) is best, just give it up. It's like arguing which American car manufacturer is best, they all suck and are made to be disposed of.

And to those who said that they would boycott Budweiser if they weren't an American company, we know you are still drinking it, because you can't drink anything else! The same guys sitting at the end of my bar saying they would only drink that swill if it were American owned can't bring themselves to try one of the many amazing micro-brews that are American owned!

I think this particular beer is targeted at people who are strictly watching their calorie intake but still want to be able to enjoy a beer. With most beers, if you have two beers that means about 300 calories. Many people drink those beers at night, so there isn't a whole lot of time to burn off an extra 300 calories, plus who wants to work out after having two beers. This is a great alternative!

Wine often gives me a head ache and booze I just don't do, as I'm not really into a certain "drink", and booze often tastes really sweet to me. If I'm going to have a beer, i'm usually sitting and chatting with friends and I'll end up having two (or three!), and like I said it's nice there aren't many calories there. I don't want some micro thing, that's so heavy and thick, that I feel like I just ate an entire meal when I'm half way thru glass #1. I don't want a beer that tastes like raspberries or chocolate or pumpkin, I want my BEER to taste like BEER. I like the option, and if you don't want it, don't drink it, nobody's forcing you too.
