Budweiser Launches 55 Calorie Beer

Anheuser-Busch

by Joshua M. Bernstein

With mountains of deep-fried chicken wings and enough guacamole to turn you green, the Super Bowl is the day when diets die a cholesterol-choked death.

But while your waist may balloon, who says you need to sport a matching beer belly too? This week marks the release of Anheuser-Busch's Select 55, a light beer that's barely more caloric -- and flavorful -- than water.

Clocking in at a slender 55 calories and 1.9 grams of carbs per 12-ounce bottle, Select is the self-professed "world's lightest beer," a statement that's as enticing as "the world's tastiest rice cake."

Truth is, no craft-beer convert would dare be caught within 100 yards of this fizzy diet beverage. To this jaded drinker, Select 55 seems like another blind grasp at rapidly disappearing market share -- beer sales sunk another 2.2 percent in 2009.

Here's a tip, Anheuser-Busch: If you want to regain your money-earning mojo, focus less on hail-mary gimmicks and start brewing beer that, you know, actually tastes good. A touchdown for our taste buds is a win-win for everyone.

If you don't plan on sitting down and drinking a 12 pack, whats the difference in 50 calories.
Like seeing someone buy a double thick burger with cheeze, large fries, and top it off with a diet soda.
LOL

I would have to guess. Just can't replace the real thing no matter how hard you try. Getting back on the homebrew wagon myself, beer just isn't what it used to be :(

It's not that I think the diet coke is cancelling out the calories in the rum...it's that I don't want to ADD to the calories already in the rum. I don't need to drink any more calories than neccessary. I don't need the added sugar in regular coke either. And the calories you are saving add up. If I have 5 drinks made w/ diet instead of regular I'm saving about 250-300 calories that I can actually EAT. People consume WAY too many calories from drinking soda and other sugary drinks.

Ha!

seriously though, I think it's about 3%, it would need to be to be that low in calories. Taste wise, its alright, but really, its' water. The 12 calorie difference isn't going to do much, Molson probably picked 67 for 1867, the year of confederation in canada.

It tastes all right for a light beer. It's good for people who are dieting, but still want to get a beer buzz. If you're not dieting though, drink something else.

You can't compare it to a regular or even "light" beer because it is what it is, a very low cal beer. If you start out drinking this it isn't bad ... don't try downing one after having a regular beer because it will taste watered down. I've got a case of it in the basement!
