Veterans are incensed over the release in Russia of soda bearing pictures of dictator Josef Stalin and other World War II leaders.
The soft drinks will hit store shelves in early February, Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper reported this week. They were produced at a beverage plant in Volgograd, Russia, to commemorate the 67th anniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad -- Volgograd's name before the fall of the Soviet regime.
The sodas will be re-released in time for end-of-war Victory Day festivities on May 9.
The three drinks have portraits on them of Stalin, Marshal Gregory Zhukov and Marshal Konstantin Rokossovksy, framed by the words "Our cause is right – We have triumphed."
About 30 million people perished during Stalin's oppressive reign.
The head of the Volgograd City Council for Military Veterans is outraged about the soda series.
"Before such a reckless step was taken, they should have interviewed the veterans," Stanislav Gorokhov said. "Really, every one of us has known much sorry from those times ... What a feeling the veterans will have who unjustly suffered from the Stalinist repressions!"
The director of the plant manufacturing the soft drinks doesn't think the lemon soda with Stalin's image on it is problematic.
"There's nothing bad here," said Boris Izgarshev. "All three military commanders are significant historical figures."

Lets look at ourselves in this country. Most of us look up to or inspire to be like people who their whole life owned literally owned other human beings. Yes they did great things. "All men are created equal" except of course if you were black at the time. Ok maybe thats going too far back. How about the whole Civil War. It was a war fought bc the southern states still wanted to have forced labor and the continued oppression of people who are different from them. Hmmmmm, where else have I heard of forced labor and oppression of peoples different from you? Oh yea it happened in the USSR, the very country that is in question now. Fine you say that was 150 years and Stalin was in the past 60 years or so. How about this one, during WWII after Peral Harbor what was it Rooservelt did? Anyone? No? He rounded up Japanese Americans and had them forcibly removed from their homes and put into internment camp. He subjugated his own people yet take a look a dime and whose picture do you see? Last time I checked it was Rooservelt. I know Stalin was an "evil" man but he is part of Russian history and look at it this way, if Hilter hadn't invaded Russia fearing Stalin would break their pact the war might have turned out differently. One last thing if nothing else its just a Russian company trying to remember Russian history and don't forget "Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it." How can you learn if you cant remember the past. And finally its Russia who gives a s**t

If you had studied history a bit more thoroughly you would have noticed Stalin was known for his purges where he killed all that might challenge him including his relatives. The man was a cold killer and anyone that paints the picture in any other color is either stupid or ignorant of the facts. Yes there are still some of us old enough to remember the truth. We are not radical right wing nut jobs or liberal give up the farm types. We know enough to read historical figures as bad when they are and any attempt to put a strong image on a pop can is just an attempt by the old party liners in Russia to prey on the stupidity of youth.

I love all the neo-cons (or are they calling themselves something else these days) who completely overlooked the fact that Russia was our ally during WW2, and that we supplied them with weapons and food in order to survive the war (thus keeping Stalin in power). I also love how they need to morf this into another anti-Obama rant. LOL.

2-01-2010 @4:27PM Chuck said... Stupid people throw out stupid comments. 30 Million was the number of people killed during WW2 by Germany. Stalin was repressive, but most Russians do not hate Stalin. Stalin got Russia through WW2 and defeated the Nazis and Germany. Communism was not bad for the people if you consider what the situation is now in Russia. Then everyone had a place to live, food but not luxury food, and a job. A lot of Russians would bring Stalin back if they could. Russians hate war, unlike the USA which gets a war going whenever it can.
