Is the New Girl Scout Cookie 'Berry' Delicious?

Rachel Been, AOL

It's that time of year again, when our friends, family and neighbors ask us (on behalf of their daughters) the age-old question, "Would you like to buy Girl Scout cookies?" New for 2010, Thank U Berry Munch is the most recent flavor to be added onto the Girl Scout Cookie roster. Stuffed with real cranberries and white-fudge chips, they were crunchy and extremely sweet. One person said they tasted just like Special K strawberry cereal bars, others said they were similar to a Pecan Sandie with cranberries (while it has a prominent crunch, there are, uh, no pecans in it).

But is this cookie for everyone? Honestly, it's hard to compete with classics like Samoas (a.k.a. Caramel deLites), Tagalongs (Peanut Butter Patties), or Thin Mints. In Thank U Berry's defense, we do like that they've incorporated the fudge chips into the cookie rather than adding a coating over the top. And real pieces of cranberry are evident throughout (trust us, they stuck to our teeth) -- we suspect that kids will love the berry flavor.

They could, however, be just a tad less sweet, and we'd also like to see less processed ingredients in the nutritional information. That way we wouldn't feel so bad when we're finishing off the box!

To order cookies, find a local council near you.

My nieces went through the program and now as my daughters Daisy leader, I support GS more than ever. This is an exceptional program for any girl. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. The cookies are made from different bakeries. Im sorry you've experienced this. Also, my daughter and I sold cookies the 'old' fashion way - door to door. We live in a small community, so that helped too. For those of you who are disappointed with the cost of cookies or where GS donates their money too, please please please donate to the Family Partnership Program at your local GS office. This program is designed to assist families who are in financial hardship and cant afford the fee to join, but would love for their daughter to join. It offsets the costs. Any donations is truly appreciated! This is a program that enlightens girls off ALL ages.

I went on to get a bachelor's degree in Math, spent three years overseas with the Peace Corps in Vanuatu, and now, after getting two Masters degrees, teach Math at a community college in California. No doubt the Girl Scouts put me on a successful path, and I learned a lot about helping the community, about leadership, and about doing the right thing. I will always buy Girl Scout cookies because I believe the Girl Scouts is a great program for young girls!

Depending on what's going on with my weight - If I am on a diet - I just give a $10 donation.

I always know that it is going to a good cause, and I remember how hard it is to stand there at the store or go door to door with your "speech".

I just believe that girls should always support other girl stuff.

This year I am going to buy a box and send a box to someone stationed in Iraq or Afghanistan.

BTW the Thankyou Berry Munch are delicious. Also as a leader of not one but two troops of girls I can tell you a portion of the profits goes to the troop, but a portion also goes to the local councils. They provide the upkeep on the beatuiful camps and properties that the girls are able to enjoy. They also use the money to provide programs for the girls and help them become young woman with confidence, commitment and courage. Programs such as cookie sales also teaches girls buisness skills. Even though things are tight for alot of people, I encourage everyone to support these girls and buy at least 1 box of cookies.

1.) God is in their pledge still, as a previous poster mentioned.
2.) Inflation happens, prices go up, they can't stay .35 a box, as much as some of us might wish. A car still doesn't cost just $1,000 anymore do they? You don't make what you did 20 years ago do you?
3.) Selling door to door isn't feasible safety wise or financially. The troop has to pay for the cookies not collected (Sometimes the girl does even!) So if someone moves for whatever reason then they are stuck. Plus, it's a lot different than it was in the 60's and 70's or earlier. There isn't always someone home ready to collect the cookies they ordered. (I've had to chase neighbors for a few WEEKS to get a hold of them due to work schedules.
4.) My troop makes the girls sell their cookies at their cookie booths. They hold the boxes, ask politely if they'd like to buy some cookies, if not, then thank you have a great day!
5.) There is a difference in quality with the different bakers, sadly. Little Brownie Bakers has a better taste according to some people I chat with in the north, compared to ABC Bakeries. I wish they could have just 1 facility making them, but it's apparently not feasible.

As a mom to 3 girls, they all will be in Girl Scouts if they wish. I love what they do for the community and for the girls. We are always collecting for the military men and women serving our country, we are always on the look out for those in need within our community.

I will say this though about Girl Scout fund raising, their Nut and Magazine sales items are MUCH cheaper in price than our local school systems and they get a lot more back than the schools do. Sorry schools in our area.

Thank you for all the supportive people and Girl Scout parents. :)

Nor can I stand the mothers putting their girls in front of everystore & mall & let them bug the living h*** out of you. If I wanted GSC, I would let them know, they do not have to ask me when I go in the store, or when I leave. I used to support the GS, not anymore & it is not because of the very high prices, it is the approach!!

Yes, I'm a former Girl Scout and the cookies were 35 cents a box when I started, and 50 cents after my first couple of years. I don't remember going door-to-door, probably because there were many other Scouts in my neighborhood. But I WAS encouraged to call all my aunts, grandparents and my parents' friends to make my sales. We had to pick up our cookie orders at our Scout leader's house, and her house was just loaded with stacks of cookie boxes when the time came. I hope I'm able to find some for sale this year!

Just today I ran into a mother and her daughter and found out it has gone up to 40 cents. Can you imagine that? Isn't that child labor? What I have done lately is I donate $20 to the troup making it clear it is not to go o headquarters but to stay with the troup. The troup mothers are very thankful for that as they always spend out of pocket to get things. Maybe you could all consider something like this. The girls get more money and GSA gets none. I'm all for that.
