It's that time of year again, when our friends, family and neighbors ask us (on behalf of their daughters) the age-old question, "Would you like to buy Girl Scout cookies?" New for 2010, Thank U Berry Munch is the most recent flavor to be added onto the Girl Scout Cookie roster. Stuffed with real cranberries and white-fudge chips, they were crunchy and extremely sweet. One person said they tasted just like Special K strawberry cereal bars, others said they were similar to a Pecan Sandie with cranberries (while it has a prominent crunch, there are, uh, no pecans in it).
But is this cookie for everyone? Honestly, it's hard to compete with classics like Samoas (a.k.a. Caramel deLites), Tagalongs (Peanut Butter Patties), or Thin Mints. In Thank U Berry's defense, we do like that they've incorporated the fudge chips into the cookie rather than adding a coating over the top. And real pieces of cranberry are evident throughout (trust us, they stuck to our teeth) -- we suspect that kids will love the berry flavor.
They could, however, be just a tad less sweet, and we'd also like to see less processed ingredients in the nutritional information. That way we wouldn't feel so bad when we're finishing off the box!

Many years ago when my kids were Girl Scouts, not only were their more cookies in a box, but my personal favorite thin mints, were not thin at all but had a thick layer of creamy mint on top under the chocolate. And, they were $1.00 a box (the good old days). Girl Scout cookies are supposed to be decadent not healthy, after all it's only once a year. http://newsy1.wordpress.com

1-25-2010 @8:59PM Iva Capps said... I remember when the cookies were 50 cents a box and we sold them door to door. Literally we had a box of cookies and you could get your fix right then. I remember saving my allowance to buy several boxes of thin mints and I would take weeks to eat them. The good old days.

Huh, when I was a girl scout - many many years ago, we had to carry the cookies with us (I lived in Minnesota so that consisted of going through waist high snow) and people would actually say NO to a box of cookies that were $.25 each. I never turn anyone down who makes an effort to come to my door. Now, they don't actually go door-to-door, they get their parents to take orders at work and I'm guessing only sell to relatives and close friends for safety reasons. I can't even tell you what they will cost this year and I know the boxes and cookies are far smaller, but whatever it is I will pay it. And, now, they have to deliver the cookies weeks after they take orders.

1-25-2010 @2:50PM Katie @Sweettaterblog said... I used two recipes from "Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar" and tweaked the ingredients to be gluten-free. They have a how-to GF section at the front. I just used a standard all-purpose GF flour.

Remember its for the girls first and foremost. Also I am tired of hearing about kids getting ahold of their parents guns and shooting each other along with innocent children and people in general being shot. People are always going to have guns so why not help who we can make smarter choices about them. I actually commend them for donating money to a cause that some people do not consider a benefit to society but in all actuality it really is! Bring on those Cookies Girls, Americans Love them!!!

I just told my wife if she ever buys another box, we're gettin' a divorce. I guess that's good news for all you insane gun control freaks.....more cookies for you to enjoy.

1-28-2010 @11:11AM sheree said... sounds like a rumor to me -- i have worked with girl scouts many years ago and no monies were donated to any groups... the poor girls only get a portion of what they sell anyways...most of it goes to main council of girl scouts not the troops... maybe an official look at the breakdown of where money goes would be in order here before getting a divorce over this one....FACTS FIRST....I will definitely continue to SUPPORT Girl Scout cookie sales......Cant wait for a yummy samoa.....

In the first place, I realize that the economy changes from year to year; therefore the prices of products have to be balanced correspondingly. But I feel sincerely that an organization as large as the Girl Scouts of America do not have to stoop to unscrupulous means of plying their trade. When I purchased those cookies in the past, it was never less than six or eight boxes--and I ate most of them. My preferences were the shortbread cookies. Even as the prices increased, I continued to be an avid client of GS cookie sales. But when the shortbread cookies sank in size and texture; the containers likewise, and the prices skyrocketed, I decided enough was enough. Besides, I don't know what charitable organizations I am supporting.
1-25-2010 @2:27PM Bonnie said... Not all Girl Scout Councils have the same cookies. Different areas have different supliers. This new cookie is not one of our council's choices. They have the option to add a cookie or not. So check with your area scouts. The selections and prices vary per council although every council must have the same core cookies (example: Mint cookie, peanut butter cookie and so on).
