German Teens Hospitalized After Drinking Hot Chili Sauce

German Teens Hospitalized After Drinking Hot Chili Sauce">
A group of German teenagers got more than they bargained for after drinking chili sauce more than 200 times hotter than normal Tabasco sauce, the Associated Press reported.

Officials say eight teens were hospitalized after drinking the hot sauce. The Red Cross in Augsburg, a city in southern Germany, told the Associated Press that 10 boys, ages 13 and 14, drank the sauce Wednesday morning in school. Officials say it was a "test of courage."

The Red Cross told the German news agency DAPD that the boys felt sick and eight were taken to the hospital and were to stay overnight, the AP reported.

The sauce the teens ingested measured 535,000 units on the Scoville scale, the scale that determines hotness in chili peppers. Tabasco sauce measures 2,500.

Also, it's "Tabasco".

Hot sauce, no matter what the pepper type used is for mixing with food, not direct consumption. Sauces based on very hot peppers, like habanero peppers are very hot, especially to persons raised eating a bland diet. The actual hotness of a pepper is rated in scovilles, with most sauces in the 2000 to 4000 scoville level. Habanero peppers are about 400,000 scovilles.
When used to enhance the flavor of food, pepper sauces can be very tasty. But, just as a hammer can be a useful tool, it can hurt you if you misuse it.

Anybody with half a brain would know not to do something like that, but seeing that they were teens it is easy to understand since most don't operate with a full deck, especially not teen boys. They don't start realizing consequences until they are well into their twenties. I find it amusing they don't mention the brand of hot sauce.

In any case, chili sauce is meant to add spice not be drunk as a beverage. Is THIS what kids learn to do in school? I'm glad mine doesn't go to a public school. I can imagine the stuff that goes on in American High Schools is three times worse.

I have not heard on the news of this practice of knocking one's self unconcious w/teabags, but if it is indeed an epidemic of self-abuse it should be addressed by our elected officials IMMEDIATELY.

The article definitely states with distinction that these guys were from southern GERMANY. And it was completely their own idiocy, not that of the govt's nor of anything that would be able to control the masses.

Clearly, you saw this as a prompt for you to use a certain sort of language that "invigorates passion." But when it's steriotypical jargon used in a confusing string of points that don't support any point you're trying to make, we see it as junk.

Thieves...? Who be stealing what here? Ehe. I see what you're trying to say, but hot sause is by no perceptible means a possible fear-inducing agent that could be manipulated by the government.

I will say this, had they have eaten a bowl of my five alarm chili, they would no longer be with us. The habenero's alone would have killed them, and that is just one of five that I use. Germans are the "Super-race", unless we are talking chili. Went to the hospital, give me a break.

And, regarding some of the other comments... bottom line (as is always the case): the parents failed these kids. When parents continually fail their kids, the government has to step in because
there's nobody else to take responsibility. That's why there are child protective agencies and annoying "laws". Oh - and it has nothing whatsoever to do with the public school system. It's the PARENTS.

I think they featured one or more 500K + hot sauces on Man vs Food. If he had it with food, you can imagine the distress these teens were in just drinking it by itself.
