SpaghettiOs, Chunky Soup Creator Dies

The former Campbell Soup Company executive who created SpaghettiOs and Chunky Soup died at his home in southern New Jersey on Sunday, the New York Times reported. He was 83.

The man behind the Os, Donald Goerke, died of heart failure, his son David told the Times.

As a marketing manager for Campbell's Franco-American products, Goerke headed up the team that was asked to develop a new canned pasta for children that had to be both durable -- able to survive canning and reheating -- and to be something parents wouldn't hesitate to serve messy children.

The result?

In 1965 the company introduced the SpaghettiO -- a stable shape that was thin enough to resist becoming gummy and that fit neatly into a spoon. Shape rejects included cowboys, spacemen and stars, the Times reported.

And the ready-to-eat pasta -- with the unforgettable tag-line "Uh-oh SpaghettiOs" -- has been popular on American tables ever since. More than 150 million cans of SpaghettiOs are sold each year, a spokeswoman for Campbell told the Times.

Goerke also created the company's popular hearty Chunky Soup line during his 35-year tenure at Campbell Soup. He retired in 1990.
