Anyone Can Be a Cooking Show Star -- Even Barbie

'I Can Be TV Chef' Playset. Photo: Amazon.com

When a colleague mentioned she bought this doll for her niece (who loved it, for the record), we were mesmerized with horror and glee. Barbie has come a long way from the basic townhouse days when we knew her -- now she can be anything from a fashionista to a race car "cutie."

Barbie has apparently become a foodie as well. Her kitchen is fully stocked, and she has all the camera gear needed for a full-on cooking show. To be honest, we think her skirt is questionably short for actual cooking, but that aside she could conceivably pass as a Sandra Lee-Giada hybrid. And yes, we kind of want one for the office . . .

I think that the cooking show is a good idea, as for the skirt. have you seen the cooking show, darn I cannot remember her name. But the premis is she turns all kinds of meals to vegan. My issue isthe way she dresses. heels and plunging neck lines. As a woman who as worked in the hospitality business for over 30 years, a real chef or cook could never put in a full days work dressed like that. Popping grease, slippery floors, and her hair is down.

Unless I misremember, most counters in kitchens are waist high. Anyone playing with this version of the doll isn't going to be paying any attention to the length of the skirt.

NOT! being a chef takes years. A lot of blood sweat and tears goes into being a chef. I'm so upset with FoodNet work and all their fake chefs and now even an iconic doll is a chef. It's not all glamor in fact 99% of it is not glamorous. Sorry I needed to vent my anger.

I agree 100% that parents have the ultimate responsibility in teaching children about "sense of self" and values etc. These dolls, both female AND male, are not based on authentic body types. As adults, we understand that and can do things to make sure our children know what real-life people in good physical condition ought to look like. I let my daughter play with Barbies, but also took her to the squadron with me on "parents' day" to see what REAL men and women who fly planes and work on aircraft in the military look like. Which ones do you think impressed her more?

I grew up in the 1970's -- girls wore their shorts and skirts that short and then some. In fact, this doll's outfit looks like it is right off "Hee Haw" circa 1970.
