Inventor of McDonald's Quarter Pounder Dies at 81

Al Bernardin, former dean of McDonald's Hamburger University (the fast-food chain's training center) and inventor of the legendary Quarter Pounder, died of a stroke, the Chicago Tribune reported. He was 81 years old.

Bernardin began his career at McDonald's corporate headquarters in 1960, and later as vice president of development was instrumental in the birth of the company's Filet-o-Fish sandwich, french fries and hot apple and cherry pies, the paper reported.

But it was in 1971, as owner of a franchise in Fremont, Calif., that Bernardin sealed his legacy with the introduction of the Quarter Pounder with the slogan "Today Fremont, tomorrow the world."

"I felt there was a void in our menu vis-a-vis the adult who wanted a higher ratio of meat to bun," he said in 1991, the Tribune reported.

His son, Mark Bernardin, told the Tribune that the frozen french fry was his father's other contribution to the fast-food universe.

Bernardin at one time owned nine McDonald's franchises in the Fremont, Calif., area and became a philanthropist, the paper reported.

Did he take care of his family? Did he love people and do right by people? That's all that matters. I'm a democrat but I'm sick of both parties getting up in each others proverbial arses over stupid stuff that doesn't even matter. Affordable healthcare for everyone that doesn't bankrupt the country, the job crisis, the shrinking middle class, the rising cost of gas, food, and education, inflation on necessary products to live but not seeing that inflation reflected in our paychecks. That's what I care about. I'm sorry about his family's loss. Proceed.

Each person makes that choice. Too many people want to blame fast food for them being over weight. Um I have been to other countries and they have fast food, but there is a difference they work out.

They don't get in car to go a block for groceries.

It's all about making right or wrong choices. Just be informed as a customer.

I have lost 30 lbs in 3 months, and that was just by counting my calories and walking mostly. I didn't have access to a fitness room or a gym membership. But I have two legs and I start walking every day slow at first and built up from there. And now walking about an 1 hr 45 min a day.

I do sit ups and few other exercises at home. I don't have weights, but I have a couple two litter bottles that I fill up with water make shift weights.

It can be done, just can't make excuses of why I cant do this or that. Because at the end of the day the excuses are nothing more than lies we tell to ourself.

Wherein attention to social skills would be beneficial, not continuing the pattern of negative parental indoctrination of hatred, bias and prejudice. Thereby indicative of loathsome inheritance, the reception of genetic non-qualities of most gentiles. Where ignorance is tolerated, intelligence cannot prevail!

I think we all need to get out and excercise more and in a health bill will they cover gym membership ?? I doubt Oh-Bammy ever thought that far ahead ..We can curb the energy crisis at home to with basic energy savers like pedal powered generators so kids have to sit on a stationary bike and pedal to se shows or play video games ..

If you think they are unhealthy then don't eat them, leave me and the millions who enjoy McDonald's alone. I eat them now and then, excersize regularly and am a healthy person. Common sence (which is almost non-exsistent in this country) and moderation is the answer. Too much of anything is bad for you, alcohol, cigarettes (which I'm sure claim more lives than the Big Mac). And to wish a man burns in hell because of a hamburgre just shows how intolerant we have become and is just plain sick. Why on earth would anyone make this a political thing??? Goodness, get over yourselves. Of course it was a demopcrate that threw that comment into the ring. Figures.

Most of the staff either cannot understand english or simply have no interest in customer service. Now I understand McDonalds is purchasing frozen chicken from China. This is the last straw for me, my famly and many of my friends. Companies like McDonalds need to remember that the American consumer put them on top and they are on their way down.

Listen, McDonalds doesn't have to do anything to help people become healtier, nobody does. You're kid is fat? make him play outside instead of having your tv babysit him and maybe possibly cook some home meals instead of taking the easy way out. You and Only you choose what goes in your body, mickey ds isn't holding you down and forcing their greasy fries down your throat but of course nobody can blame themselves. So of course you blame the people with the most money. Thats ridiculous that anyone would even think that way. Exercise is healthy, it always has been and it always will be and somewhere along the line people stopped taking responsibility for their health. Mcdonalds didn't send anyone to the hospital, poor choices and a poor lifestyle did.
