Old-time soda aficionados and those curious to try something new have reason to celebrate in the New Year. Pepsi will be distributing a limited edition of Throwback Pepsi and Throwback Mountain Dew.
The Throwback contains real sugar instead of HFCS. HFCS stands for high fructose corn syrup--used to make all mainstream sodas (and lots of other foods, like ketchup) sweet. For those of us (i.e. nearly everyone) worried about calories, do not fear. Pepsi Throwback has the same amount of calories as regular Pepsi.
As BevReview.com notes, this conversion is remarkable news in the soda guzzling world because until now if you wanted a soda made with real cane sugar, you had to buy an import like Mexican Coke or wait until Passover for kosher for Passover Coke or Pepsi.
Throwback was first rolled out last spring for a limited period, and the response was so positive that PepsiCo Company decided to reintroduce the sodas for another restricted period.
"Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback feature natural sugar with a taste that gives consumers an idea of how the brands tasted back in the 60's and 70's," says Nicole Bradley a spokesperson for the company. "Consumers have told us that they enjoy taking a nostalgic trip back in time with these special retro versions."
Once again the fizzy beverages will only be available for a limited eight-week run which started on December 28th.
Not only will the taste be different but the look of the bottle has also been tinkered with. Gone is the smiling circle that currently graces Pepsi sodas. It will be replaced by a retro Pepsi logo as will the Mountain Dew bottles.

Given that Canada does get soda made with sugar and the close proximity between the Canadian plants to the American border, I wonder if they simply redirected shipments bound for the Canadian market and gave them a re-badging. Seems like it'd be cheaper than temporarily re-purposing their American plants.
Stop stealing our delicious delicious soda! :O

I wish I didn't have to disagree with you, but every bottle of Pepsi/Coke/etc. that I've inspected here in the great white north has listed glucose-fructose (AKA HFCS) as an ingredient. I've taken HFCS out of my diet which means I have to look farther afield for real sugar sodas.
When I heard about the throwback Pepsi I was very excited but it never made it to my part of the country, and I'm not sure it made it north of the border at all. Hopefully it will be different during this run, and possibly they'll realize that they're missing out on a market that seems to be growing.

Pepsi Natural, which was made entirely from natural ingredients (cane sugar, caramel, sparkling water, etc) was much, much better. I'd like to see them bring that out permanently.
Until then, though, sodas are off my menu.

I immediately compared the ingredients to the blue can of pepsi, and yep, throwback has real sugar, blue can has high fructose. Throwback taste more like what we drank as kids. I like them both so not a problem here, but the cans certainly look a little strange after getting used to the blue cans.

Dr Pepper from Dublin has been made with cane sugar for over 100 years. It's not widely available, but it can be bought at several locations here around Texas. It's got a very distinctive taste from the corporately canned Dr Pepper. And it's worth the extra bit of cost to support the dying breed of small town companies that refuse to sell out to the easy way of doing things.

Then one day I noticed it tasted "different" and the more I drank it the more I noticed this "difference". This "difference" was the HFCS replacing sugar. I stopped drinking it. Now for the past few years I noticed that whenever coke/pepsi is included in the big ice barrels at any get-togethers, nobody drinks it any more. I think that's why all these alternate sports drinks became so popular. People don't like the Coke and Pepsi any more so they're looking for "something" else. My grandkids won't drink Coke or Pepsi.
Now if they really do put the real sugar back in it and skip that HFCS crap, I'll be looking for it!

Their complete line of sodas are just great and are legendary in this area. Often sold in local pizza restaurants.

I had pretty much quit drinking soda because of the HFCS, and the bad taste it had. Now that they have it back, they just need to keep it on the market period! Oh, and if you didn't know, the released Dr. Pepper this time too! Tastes like a Dublin Dr. Pepper!!!!!

Not to get political, but there is a political reason why. In the 1970's, corn producing company Archer Daniels Midland lobbied the federal gov't to restrict the amount of sugar imported to the US, which in turn caused the price of sugar to skyrocket. Food manufacturers had to find an affordable and easily obtainable alternative to sweeten their products, so they turned to HFCS. Voila! We see how lobbying the fed can produce excellent sales results for domestic companies using federal regulation. This is the article I found it in, and it's really about Jones Soda, which uses real sugar, but the story is in there: http://mises.org/daily/2678

But they aren't the only ones with sugar drinks...Boylan Root Beers, Dads, Dublin Dr Peppers....Anyway, the sugar definitely tastes better and is better for you than HFCS...I have understood that HFCS even has unposted "preservatives" in it you don't want to know about "Formaldehyde"? And sugar is natural...I think Pepsi's "new one" might stay...Hope people buy it over the other
