South Carolina Highway Patrol Bribes Drivers With Chick-Fil-A

Flickr, Termin8er

The increased probability of surviving a car crash hasn't persuaded enough South Carolinians to buckle up, so the state's highway patrol has turned to a more reliable incentive: Chick-Fil-A coupons.

This Thanksgiving, the South Carolina Highway Patrol started rewarding free chicken sandwich vouchers to seat-belted drivers in three counties around Charleston. So far, officers have distributed 1200 coupons.

"We're rewarding people for doing the right thing," Lance Corporal Bob Beres explains.

But the coupons aren't reserved for do-gooders. Officers typically size up drivers for seat belt use when they're pulled over for moving violations, which means a South Carolinian caught speeding could end up with points on his license, a hefty fine, increased insurance premiums and a hand-breaded boneless chicken breast on a buttered bun.

Beres told The Greenville News that it's up to the officer whether a driver stopped for drunk driving gets a sandwich.

"If you have a DUI, the chances are you're not going to get one," he said.

Officers are also giving out coupons at seat belt checkpoints, and Beres reports he's gotten into the habit of rewarding coupons to drivers who pull into gas stations with their seat belts buckled.

The program seems to be working: Local police officers say drivers, obviously aware of a seat belt's worth, are now demanding Chick-Fil-A coupons when stopped.

Beres says the Highway Patrol hopes to take the program statewide next year.

"We've lost 394 people on South Carolina roadways from not wearing their seat belts," Beres says. "Just know the South Carolina Highway Patrol wants you to wear your seat belt, and Chick-Fil-A wants you to eat more chicken."

Two problems solved at once...
1. high cost of treating seatbelt-less drivers is removed from the health care system (why should we try to save their lives if they don't care about enough to buckle)
2. boost in the available organs for people that actually care about their life.

More to the story...this sure got me hungry for one of their sandwiches and shakes :)

Thus saying, if you wish to drive, you should be .compelled to follow the rules. Its NOT your right, if it was you wouldnt HAVE to take a test to drive. If it was you wouldnt lose points or have to worry about getting pulled over. AND with that wearing a seatbelt isnt a big issue. I mean HONESTLY. Wearing a device, that is relatively unnoticed most the time, is that big a deal for you? The reason is because maybe Highway patrol and the likes dont feel like taking dead bodies to the morgue. SINCE afterall THEY HAVE TO deal with you when your dead because a seatbelt was SUCH an issue for you.

THe point, your neglagence costs EVERYONE else around you. Just wear your seatbelt.

I wish it didn't have to be such awful food though...

The belt keeps you in the seat and in control and able to steer or brake. Its hard to control a vehicle from the backseat when you are thrown there, or out the window! If you are not in control your vehicle, it becomes a 2 ton metal missile than kill or maim anyone it hits or runs over. Think! seat belts make sense!

And the state where the moron called Obama a liar in the state of the union address over healthcare reform? And is this the state where Sen DeMint has been holding up the nomination of a TSA director, which is hurting our nation's security? And now they want to give out chicken sandwich coupons to people who wear seatbelts? Where can I sign the petition to ask them to succeed from the union? Good Lord, no wonder people think we are stupid....Nothing against the people of SC, it's a beautiful state, but you guys sure vote for dummies and do some real dumb things.

Holding up the nomination of a TSA Director is called making sure the person is well qualified and right for the job, which is a constitutional duty, and we have seen the criminal candidates that keep pouring into our government already because obama wants thugs, criminals and commies around him. And the word secede is not spelled succeed. At least SC has an incentive for people to buckle up. Only those elected in SC who are pro-obama, anti-constitution were voted in by idiots.
