Couple Replaces Wedding Cake with Giant Tuna Fish
by Jennifer Lawinski, Posted Dec 23rd 2009 @ 4:30PM
A company in Japan is taking the traditional wedding cake in a very different direction, replacing it with a giant tuna.
In a video on YouTube a Japanese couple cuts a 100 kilogram -- or about 220 pound -- BigEye tuna with a very large knife at their wedding reception, JapanProbe.com reports.
The company has been offering the tuna-cutting wedding ceremonies for about 10 years, Japan Probe reports. A minimum plan costs about 300 yen per person based on 50 guests, which works out to about 150,000 yen or $1,600.
Would you trade your wedding cake for raw tuna? Let us know in the comments below!

12-26-2009 @12:17AM pkl said... I don't think I'd trade the tuna for the cake, but I think having that beast for the main dish would be awsome! Everyone cuts their own slab of raw tuna with a nice selection of fixins for sushi, that would be better than any lame wedding dinner I've ever had. Then some traditional cake and ice cream for desert. Yum!

12-26-2009 @1:55AM Norman said... Your adding machine is bad. Try multiplying 50 times 300 and it's 15,000, not 150,000. At current exchange rates I think you'll find that instead of $1,600 it's more like $160. Not such a big deal for a big fish.

12-27-2009 @4:59PM martesa said... You're both right -- it is $160, not the $1600 as reported, but that is per person.
12-27-2009 @5:07PM Phil said... Great comeback Steve, Some people shouldn't comment, specially when they are stupid and want to pretend they are smart, like Norman. We should name this Wedding Tuna Sushi in his honor and called the dumbass sushi special. And give him the dumbass bill since he said it was cheap. LMAO.
12-27-2009 @5:11PM cannotbelievethis said... actually Norman, in the fish markets in japan, tune DO go for upwards of $10,000 - pricier than cakes... looks like the groom is currying favor with new in-laws and potential bosses!
12-27-2009 @5:11PM stephanie said... they actually said each person would cost about 3000 yen so around 30 bucks.
12-27-2009 @5:54PM JohnBoy said... The article says 300 yen per person by 50 people... not 15,000 yen per person by 50 people, giving you a GRAND TOTAL of............ wait for it............. $160!! So Steve, Martisa and Phil..... please go back to school and learn to read.
12-28-2009 @8:04AM Ant said... The mistake in the article was a missing zero in the 300 Yen (should read 3000), not the math. Go try to buy a fresh whole tuna for $160 and your fishmonger will likely send you to the supermarket to buy some in the can.
12-27-2009 @10:04PM Scott said... 300 yen per guest = 3.27 USD per guest. 3.27 x 50 = about 160 USD. I imagine they meant 3000 yen in the article.
12-26-2009 @6:12AM Kathy Pickett said... Maybe it's customary to have a tuna cake even If It's only In the eyes of the Bride and Groom.
I say Congratulations to both of them and personally I think It was a beautiful looking Tuna.
My daughter Is getting married January 2 . One week from tomorrow ordered a private cake above and beyond the catering hall because I think our guest will enjoy. A Chocolate pudding filling with black raspberries alternating every other Layer with butter cream blended in on yellow/white interior. I sure that couple and their guest will never forget about that part of there ceremony.

12-27-2009 @4:14PM Elaine said... Got news for you Kathy: No one at any wedding, with the exception of the mother of the bride, gives a rat's ass about an upgrade on the wedding cake. Seriously. No one. Of course your guests are going to wow and say it is good. Do you think they are going to say it tastes bad? I'll pay the person who says that. Wasted money. Wasted time. The men sure as hell don't give a crap. Tell your princess I wish her the best and don't forget to save a piece in the freezer for her one year anniversary.
