Two supermarket chains pulled College Inn No MSG Chicken Broth from store shelves after Del Monte Foods Co. issued a voluntary recall for mislabeling, the Associated Press reports.
The broth contains a wheat allergen left off the label in addition to monosodium glutamate, a flavor enhancer.
Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. and Giant Food Supermarkets both pulled the product over the weekend, the AP said. Del Monte told Slashfood in a statement it had not received reports of illness related to consumption of the mislabeled broth.
Cans included in the recall are 14.5 ounces with the UPC 2400032230.
"College Inn values the health and well-being of its consumers, and regrets this situation," Del Monte spokeswoman Chrissy Stengel told Slashfood in a statement.

Customers can return any unused portions or bring in a receipt for a full refund, AP reported.
All other sizes and varieties of College Inn broth are correctly labeled, Giant said in its Saturday statement.
Consumers looking for more information can call the College Inn Consumer Hotline at 1-800-552-7684.
Giant Food has stores in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C. Stop & Shop stores are in New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

It's not to prove they didn't steal it it's to prove that they actually had any to start with! Customers who have unused portions can return them without receipts to any retailer. That's the same for any recall.

A few days ago I purchased 8 cans of this broth at Giant, located just west of West Chester, PA 19380. Fortunately, they are still on my pantry shelf. Interesting, purchasers must supply receipt of purchase. I don't know of another recalled product that ever required a receipt. Just the return of the unused product or used cans if you still have them in your trash/recycle stuff. Maybe need to change to another brand like Swanson (No MSG). Comparaable price and on sale at times, less than College Inn.

I have had to return items and 9 times out of 10 I didn't have my receipt and I only got a hassle from one place. I can say that both Giant and Stop and Shop never gave me any problem, the only thing, which most stores do now, is I had to get the refunded amount put on a store gift card. So relax and just bring your purchase back.

It also goes under the name "Natural Flavors" and companies get away with using it under the other name "Natural Flavors" instead of calling it MSG. That way people are not aware of what they are about to consume until the allergic reaction kicks in.

If one IS allergic to MSG, then assume that anything that has the words 'natural flavor' in the ingredient declaration as containing MSG, just in case. Also, if you are deathly allergic to MSG, be sure to not eat tomatoes, seaweed on sushi rolls, soy sauce, beer, and other naturally MSG containing foods.

These are people who are highly allergic to the ingredient.By the way, my husband had KFC gravy after Thanksgiving. He is a physician and can abort a reaction with the proper meds. This must have had a tremendous amt. of MSG in it. He was unaware of this when he ate it.I had to call 911 and his heart rate was over 200 for 5 hours. It CAN kill you. It does affect the heart.Very few studies have been done on this.
