Fixing Oversalted Food - Tip of the Day

Overseasoned food? Don't throw it out! Learn how to fix a salty recipe flop.

We've all done it. A quick misread turned three teaspoons of salt into three tablespoons. Or heavy-handed measuring over the bowl caused an ingredient to whoosh out -- far exceeding the intended amount.

Waste not, want not, right?

An old wives' fix is to slice a raw potato and add it to the oversalted recipe. One stipulation here is that the culprit dish must be rather liquidy, like a soup or stew, as the potato absorbs some of the liquid and consequently, in theory, some of the salt.

A more tried-and-true approach is to add sugar or something acidic like vinegar to neutralize the salt.

And lastly, if extra ingredients remain on hand, simply double the recipe -- without adding more salt.
