Homemade Butterscotch Sauce - Tip of the Day

Butterscotch sauce is a rich and buttery treat that makes a great seasonal dessert topper in place of chocolate or whipped cream.

Butterscotch sauce drizzled over ice cream, gingerbread or baked into a traditional pudding is a signature autumn flavor.

Because of its intense richness, many think the velvety sauce is the product of a hard winter's night spent in the kitchen. However, simply cooking butter with sugar and adding a hint of vanilla at the last minute gives it the characteristic caramel flavor.

For one cup of the decadent sauce, melt 1/2 stick of unsalted butter in a saucepan. Add in 1/2 cup brown sugar and stir until well blended. Bring to a slight boil for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and stir in a teaspoon of vanilla extract. Serve warm or store covered in the refrigerator for your next dinner party.
