Restaurant Employees Accused of Poisoning Salsa

Officials in Kansas say 48 customers sickened by salsa at a Mi Ranchero Mexican restaurant in August may have been the victims of a revenge plot by a former employee.

Nation's Restaurant News reports that Arnoldo Bazan, 30, and his wife, Yini De La Torre, 19, were charged in U.S. District Court for allegedly mixing Methomyl, a poison used in pesticides, with the salsa in a Mi Ranchito restaurant. De La Torre is the niece of Mi Ranchito co-owner Rulber Dela Torre.

Officials said the alleged poisonings are tied to Bazan's firing from the Mi Ranchito in Olathe, Kan., and his belief that one of the owners was responsible for the loss of his vehicle, NRN.com reports.

Initially, investigators suspected faulty water lines created toxic acid which sickened the chain's patrons. The indictment against the couple, however, indicates a plot to hurt the chain's bottom line.

The indictment against Bazan and De La Torre alleges that Bazan made anonymous threats after being fired from Mi Ranchito in June. On Aug. 10, De La Torre allegedly put Methomyl into the salsa intended for customers of the Mi Ranchito branch where she worked, Nation's Restaurant News reports.

Dozens of customers reported falling ill after eating at the restaurant. De La Torre allegedly poisoned the salsa again on Aug. 30, sickening 36 customers.

Bazan allegedly wanted the Mi Ranchito chain to be blamed for the incidents and suffer financial harm, NRN reports.

"We had a lot of problems in the beginning, but we're relieved this is over and that we can get on with our lives and business," Rulber Dela Torre told NRN. "But what is really going to fix my problem is getting my customers back. Each one is worth a million dollars to me."

The indictment says De La Torre later told reporters the salsa was to blame.

This owner thinks in dollars, not livers, kidneys, etc. I am sickened by the statement of the owner putting a monetary value on the lives of those poisoned.

That was the best he could do? Too bad he didn't eat a bunch of that salsa too.

They are just dollar signs to him! Me, personally, I would have stated I was delighted to get them back due to regaining trust and friendship with them!

Just because someone is from a third world country does not mean they "can get every chemical they want." You say Mexicans know landscaping, etc, but my best friend of over fifteen years was born in a small town in Chihuahua, Mexico, became a US citizen, and now has four bachelors degrees, is moving on towards her masters and is only 24 years old. Sounds like she's slightly more educated than you are with the way you are talking. Then you go on to say (not sure if you are being sarcastic or truly ignorant) that "it's a good thing we're not a country fueled by the almighty dollar".... We are a commercialist nation! Corporations run our lives and our money runs them. We are WAY more run by money that Mexico or any other country on this planet will EVER be. Rather than mindlessly comment on things which you know nothing about, I would suggest you try reading a book and leave the thinking to the big people.

I don't think he expects to make a million dollars from each customer.

However, things will change, the mexicans will eventually figure out how to obtain the better paying jobs. Will you be racist when they take over your job???

I am trying to take advantage of the retraining stimulus program to finish the last few credits of my degree which would open a lot more doors for me. (I could go back to school while collecting unemployment - $275 a week in Fl). While trying to get through all the red tape and paper filing I am currently behind 500 boatloads of immigrants who are on welfare, food stamps, etc... etc...

The last time I tried to get some questions answered and hand in some of the required forms, I had to wait for over 3 hours while the lady in charge of the program helped the non-english speaking people ahead of me fill out forms that included questions like, "what is your name", "where do you live", do you already have a degree", because the forms are not available in spanish.

How are they going to get through training and college classes taught in English? Most of these people go straight to the head of the line because of their welfare status and the number of children they have.

Because I am single with no dependents (why would I choose to have children when I couldn't afford them)collecting $275 a week before taxes, I do NOT qualify for food stamps. Because I have been foolishly working, I do NOT qualify for any federal loans or grants. There is something really, really wrong here.

My options at this point are to take a job that pays half of what I was making before or getting myself knocked up by the first available illegal I can find. Jennir's friend with her 4 bachelor's degree and working on her master's....makes me sick.

I think the owner was saying he valued his customers, was not putting a $ amount on them. When was the last time you spent a million dollars in ANY restaurant? Would you have liked it better if he had said they were worth their weight in gold?

You both are racist biggots!! Not all Mexicans are like what this restaurant employee is accused of doing. I say this because my sister-in-law, a very intelligent lady, is from Mexico. She makes an honest living as a real estate agent, and pays taxes....both of you need to take your racial bigotry elsewhere!!! Both of you need to judge people on the content of their character, not the color of their skin, or their national origin!!! DAMN BIGGOTS!!!

The government gives them healthcare, housing, some cases cell phones, food stamps, and more. We pay for this. Why? I did not bring these people here, I should pay for myself and my family. They come, have a ton of kids, and expect everything handed to them. And idiots like you wonder why people become racist...if you are not racist then you support them.

furthermore, you call them lazy and that they expect everything handed to them? i don't see any of them ranting away on a computer like yourself. they are some of the hardest workers i've seen, making minimum wage (usually less), yet still working with enthusiasm. 1, 2, 3 jobs at a time even, JUST TO SUPPORT THEIR FAMILY.

again, i want to reiterate that i support them if they come here legally, but don't blame them. i sympathize for the HUMAN BEINGS such as yourself and i. and no, just because i don't support it doesn't mean i'm racist.

people like you make me disgusted with our society. how about we send YOU to mexico in return for immigrants? sounds like a very fair trade to me.

It makes me afraid to go and eat anywhere for the fact someone on a anger trip could put something dangerous in my food. Complain to your manager or say something to the customer but if you are disgruntled poisioning anything should be out of the question.
