Fight For Your Country -- Get a Free Bloomin' Onion

Nothing says "Thank You" like a free lunch.

And in the spirit -- and to celebrate Veteran's Day -- next Wednesday, several major casual-dining restaurants -- including Applebee's, McCormick & Schmick's and Golden Corral -- are offering free food to the nation's military vets and active-duty personnel, USA Today reports.

Outback Steakhouse is offering a free Bloomin' Onion appetizer and a drink to vets and current military personnel on Wednesday. Krispy Kreme is giving away donuts, and even Home Depot and Lowe's are getting in on the action offering 10-percent discounts to military.

At Applebee's restaurants around the country, vets and active-duty military can get a free entree on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until midnight. And while Applebee's will ask for military ID, the company says it won't be sticklers for proof.

"We're not going to argue with folks who might forget to bring it," Sam Rothschild, senior vice president of operations for Applebee's told USA Today.

McCormick & Schmick's will give vets a free entree on Sunday instead of on the holiday so that vets can bring their families. The restaurant will also ask for military ID and recommends reservations.

Buffet meals will be free for both veterans and active-duty military at Golden Corral restaurants on Monday, Nov. 16, from 5 to 9 p.m. The event -- the restaurant chain's ninth annual Military Appreciation Monday -- is not on Veteran's Day so that it doesn't interfere with holiday activities.

Additionally, the Ark Restaurant Group wrote in a e-mail alert to customers that they "will not be charging our soldiers and veterans for their meal on Veterans Day at any of our restaurants on the East Coast."

Industry analysts say the promotions will help restaurants improve their image at a time when casual-dining restaurant sales are falling fast.

Why shame on them? Businesses don't have to do anything and we should be grateful for any consideration, that businesses give out. Especially for the vets. It is like smacking a gift horse in the mouth. How about being grateful, not critical.

Many times after we bury our Sons or Daughters we are now left out of the Military. Somebody needs to wake up and remember that some parent or wife or children have lost someone they love and the person who died was protecting your Freedom, Remember Freedom Isn't Free.

that is the big down fall to disneys offering as it requires that you have an id card active retired reserve/national guard with orders

most people and companies seem to forget that a vast majority of vetrans do not have an id saying they are vetrans becasue they severd less then 15 years

A clerk saw my VA card and told me about it! Also, as I have never eaten at Applebys, I may try it out for lunch, and then Golden Coral on Monday for dinner. I've seen better coupons for Outback so their offer is somewhat suspect. Several of us Vets are going to go together from work Monday night to Golden Coral, some are having family members meet us there, and we will have a great time of fellowship and rememberance. Thanks to all the businesses that are stepping up on this day.

You got to be kidding me, these men and women will have made it back from various wars and they we are going to try killing them by giving them a deep fried cholesterol fatty lunch. Not nice. What about offering them money to spend at a health food store or a free massage or a free session with a nutrtionist!

I used to eat lots of processed foods. The woman at Wendy's knew my order (double cheeseburger, fries and a diet coke) Even though I was eating a lot of calories, I was always hungry and snacking on junk. When I wasn't eating unhealthy, I was on a diet...it was either one or the other...no middle ground. After struggling over the years to lose weight and keep it off, I finally found what worked for me. I avoid processed high calorie foods and keep it simple and walk every day. Eat less, burn more!
I now eat a healthy high fiber (much more filling) diet (lots of grilled chicken and veggies) and go walking for at least 20 minutes every day. WALKING is the best exercise and overall toner! It does not require a gym membership, a trainer or fancy shmancy equipment. I wear smartsole exercise insoles http://www.smartsole.com . They are anti cellulite insoles that help you tone muscles, increase circulation and cause you to burn more calories with every step. So you are getting a work out and toning your legs and butt even when just running errands.
I read about them in Prevention mag in an article on exercise shoes and they are a fabulous way to get toned for those of us with crazy schedules. They listed the code ww10 to save 10% off. I have lost over 50 pounds during the 3 years and though not skinny, I am now in shape and toned (and my butt is higher!) and can wear a size 8 jeans. Toned, healthy and fit with curves is the goal! I am not perfect and still do a Wendy's run and have a slice of pizza from time to time too...just not every day, and not in ginormous quantities.
