Grimes, of Troy, Mich., told Slashfood she noticed something moving inside the package as she was getting ready to make a salad for dinner.
"I didn't know what I was seeing but sure enough, I looked a little closer and there was a small light green tree frog, happy as can be, crawling around, living life in the bag of lettuce," she said Tuesday. "I just sort of gasped a bit, and then I stared and just remember thinking 'That's not right.'"
Grimes decided to keep the frog -- still in the bag of lettuce -- for three days in the garage, stored in a paper bag. "I didn't really want it in my house," she said.
A FOX 2 camera crew came on Monday to document Grimes opening the bag. The video clip shows the frog leaping out of the lettuce and onto the kitchen counter.
While the Grimes children wanted to keep the frog as a pet, the family released it into their backyard.
Kroger spokesman Dale Hollandsworth said that the grocery chain has never before had reports of frogs found in bags of the chain's lettuce.
"We're obviously very surprised that that little thing survived harvesting. It survived trimming. It survived washing. It survived cooling the product to 40 degrees and then being in the package," he told Slashfood. "I hope that's a tribute to how gently we handle our lettuce when we're harvesting and cleaning it."
Hollandsworth offered the Grimes family an apology and said the store would replace the romaine lettuce. He offered his backyard pond as a potential home for the frog.
Grimes, however, doesn't foresee Kroger lettuce in her future. "I certainly won't be buying this grocery store's lettuce ever again."
And her son has also grown leery of salad. "Literally as the reporter and the camera were leaving, my son said 'I'm never eating lettuce again,'" she said. "I thought 'Oh boy.'"

Don't we all have something important to do -- really?

I had to work the salad bar that day, and sure enough...I found a green frog in the huge bowl of lettuce already on the bar for serving. Appears to be a common occurrence. I quickly removed the frog and released it outside... Pretty amazing that it survived the processing of the packaged chopped lettuce.

I remember once we were at a flea market and my mom walked over to a fruit stand. My sister, who was around 15 at the time says "Momma would go look at fruit at a place like this" I asked her what she was talking about and she says "It's outside and it's hot" I kinda nudged her and asked her where she thought fruit was grown. Everyone wants fresh food and pesticide free food, where that comes from there are animals and insects. You can't have both fresh, pesticide free food and bug and animal free food. Lol, I am sometimes amazed at how often people "forget" food comes from nature. It is our "convenient" society. It is a simple tree frog, wash the lettuce and eat. If that creeps you out, you do not wanna know what else was more than likely crawling on it before the tree frog.

I sent the wing to the Jello company and they sent back several coupons for free pudding. I would have loved to have gotten the frog. They're good luck, and so cute!

After the movie had started, my friend was eating a box of M&M's. I suddenly felt an elbow nudge me and when I looked at my friend, she had this terrible look on her face. In her hand was a clump of M&M's stuck together with chewing gum!
Eeeeeewwwwww! I had a good laugh, even though se wasn't amused!

How many trace bug parts and such in canned food? A child will react to stimuli based upon the parents reaction, so it really is her fault her kid does not want to eat lettuce any more. Yes I have found snails, etc. in fresh produce, I wash it off and go on, whatever.

Does she really think this was some sort of "food scare" or just a three dollar ticket to national publicity? I say give Kroger a break and find better things to worry about, and let the kids keep the damn frog!

It was a beautiful, dressing-covered butterfly, still alive. He had survived all the packaging, plus a rinse at my house and the dressing. I picked him up and placed him outside.
I also find lots of bugs and dirt in farmers market lettuce. Once it's washed, though, it's delicious.
