The Food Network star was serving up some "sizzling soft tacos" to a group of sixth graders at New York City's Public School 89 when the uninvited guest crashed the party. A reporter for the New York Daily News noticed the six-legged bug scrambling across the table, and then watched as Charlie Dougiello, Ray's publicist, swatted the vermin away.
Ray, who was at the school to introduce her new healthy lunch menu, told the Daily News that she missed the whole thing. "I did not see that. It's unfortunate if there was [a bug]. I think that these schools strive to be the best across the board; I'm sure that includes cleanliness."
The special menu was developed in conjunction with the city's Department of Education and Ray's foundation, Yum-o!, and features the soft tacos, sweet roasted corn, vegetarian "veg-head" beans, steamed broccoli and a southwest Yum-o! ranch sauce. It will be served on Thursday to more than 600,000 public school students.
"Since 2004 we have made our meals healthier and tastier by providing items, such as fresh fruits, low-fat milk and whole wheat grains and pasta," Deputy Chancellor Kathleen Grimm said in a statement. "Thanks to Rachel Ray, we have a new menu item that fits our nutritional guidelines and is a great choice for our students.
The sixth-grade taste testers at PS 89 gave Ray's lunch vittles the thumbs up.
"It just doesn't taste like the normal cafeteria food," Coby Levinson, 11, told the Daily News. "It tastes better."
"I like the beans the best because I eat chicken a lot," classmate Peyton Avrans told the paper.

Hello boys and girls ... todays lesson will be how to make tacos with a crunch ... all you need is your favorite taco fixings and a few 6 legged creatures to give it that extra crunch we all crave ... and were not talking about the lettuce either ... top it all off with some zesty mild sauce ... and enjoy!!! Yum!!

10-29-2009 @10:20AM What?! said... You should take a look around at some of the restaurants in D.C. You would find at two or more cockroaches scurrying under the table. The health department had to close it down repeatedly. That was back during the 1980s, but now I think the city are getting better, thanks to the housing market in 1990s that drove out many ghetto dwellers who lack their responsibility to keep their rented home area free from food trash spill overs.
