Oprah Goes Vegan With Gardein

Gardein is the latest plant-based protein line that is animal- and dairy-free. The product's "meaty texture" comes from a blend of soy, wheat and pea proteins, vegetables and grains (quinoa, amaranth, millet and kamut). In fact, the name Gardein is a combination of "garden" and protein."

Gardein is getting a lot of press these days because of Oprah Winfrey. Chef Tal Ronnen, who created Oprah's vegan 21-Day Cleanse menu, also helps Gardein in its development of different flavors, textures and variations.

Here is a list of where to buy Gardein near you.

Not because of Oprah (I would not likely every do anything simply because Oprah said to), but just because, as a vegetarian, as well as the cook in a vegetarian household, I am always looking for new, interesting and tasty things to add variety to our meals.

Personally, I was very disappointed, and am unlikely to buy Gardein products in the future based on my experience with the product. As far as my family was concerned, it tasted just like Mock Duck from a can with a mediocre BBQ sauce. Since I can buy the same quantity of Mock Duck at my local Asian market for US$1.49 and add a much better BBQ sauce, there is no compelling reason to pay 4x as much for the Gardein product.

Simple economics, really.

I am worried because peas are restricted for a gout diet, yet this sounds like such a good idea since high cholestrol, high triglycerides, Stage 3 chronic kidney disease, and Type 2 diabetes (diet controlled) are also an issue. Help please.
