Grilled Chicken Lawsuit Accuses McDonald's of Serving Cancer-Causing Meat

A new class-action lawsuit filed Wednesday in Connecticut alleges McDonald's, Burger King and Friendly's failed to warn customers that their grilled chicken could cause cancer.

The suit, filed by two Connecticut residents in the Superior Court of the State of Connecticut: Judicial District of Hartford, claims the chains failed to warn consumers that they're serving grilled poultry containing the compound PhIP, which the state of California considers to be a carcinogen. A similar lawsuit filed in California last month against KFC targeted the Colonel's Kentucky Grilled Chicken.

The Cancer Project, the nonprofit that filed the suit on behalf of the residents, says eating PhIP -- even in small amounts -- can increase one's risk of cancer.

"Consumers deserve to know that grilled chicken from McDonald's and other fast-food chains can increase your risk of cancer," Cancer Project President Dr. Neal D. Barnard said in a statement. "Even a grilled-chicken salad increases the risk of developing some cancers, including breast and prostate cancer."

But a McDonald's spokeswoman said customer "safety and well-being" is a "top priority."

"Scientific research shows that PhIP is naturally occurring, and is created when chicken is grilled -- whether at home -- or in a restaurant. It may be present at low concentrations in oven-broiled, pan-fried, and grilled meats, as a result of normal cooking," Cynthia Goody, McDonald's nutrition director, said. "There is no scientific evidence to suggest the small amount of PhIP that can be created as a by-product of cooking methods humans have employed for thousands of years, poses a health risk.

"Like other restaurant companies and food establishments, at McDonald's, we continue to look to the FDA and USDA for their guidance on PhIP," her statement continued. "Beyond that, because this is a pending legal matter, it would be inappropriate to further comment or speculate."

Are you worried about grilled chicken?
Nope. I love it, and it's healthy.6987 (45.2%)
Somewhat concerned.6350 (41.1%)
Afraid I'll get cancer, so I never touch the stuff.2104 (13.6%)

Seems like an attempt to grab some cash via a cheap lawsuit.

I constantly hear about the health nut who never drank, smoked, and always ate healthy dropping dead at 56 on the tennis court. If the left don't get ya, the right will. I'm going with a smile on my face.

This lawsuit is a sham and to be fair, every meat producer in the country should put those warnings on ALL meats. In the grocery store, at five star restaurants, and perhaps a little sticker on sneeze guards at buffet style restaurants and banquet functions.

These vegetable heads need to find something else to spend taxpayers money on. The answer...DON'T EAT IT. I don't eat raw fish but I don't gather up my friends and picket sushi bars. And I don't trust any state that doesn't serve iced tea before June Connecticut.

I suspect that it's just another effort by another group to be politically correct while interferring with a person's right to choose for themselves. What does it really matter if it's goingt to happen no matter who grills the chicken?

It included the crystal that wine is served in. these people are loons. The lawyers are only looking for a big payout attacking corporations yet again. The people suing are in for a big surprise if they win the miniscule amount the lawyers turn over after fees.

STOP IT ALREADY!!!!!!! everything gives you cancer ok! now just go back and eat your meal. no wonder America is being left in the dust. we have become scared to do, say, and now eat anything for fear of being sued. Just because some jackass convinced a group of little brains, that everyting is being done on purpose to them. Here is a though instead of sueing and wasting all that money on an attorney, which by the way will not make your cancer go away, how about spending that money on finding a cure for the damn thing. OK so you win your law suit....so what your still going to die!!!! so what good will it do? you will not live to spend it. if your that stupid then please...shut up, stop eating the chicken or everything for that matter and drop dead from starvation....MMMMMM taste like chicken.. I will make sure when I am at your funneral not to drop any crumbs in the casket from my grilled chicken sandwhich

It is said to be in all meat even that cooked at home. Sue the chicken farmer who probably adds things to the chicken feed to make his chickens bigger and healthier. This is probably a conspiracy by PETA. Hello animals are here on this earth for human consumption. And guess what it is yummy!!!!!! Go MEAT !!!!!

When only 10 to 20% of the settlement money goes to civil penalties and 70 to 80% goes to attorney's fees, there's something wrong with the system. Law firms and individuals received $68,000,000 from 2000 through 2008, an average of more than $8,500,000 per year!! Are California's residents safer than the rest of us because of Prop 65?? Do they have fewer physical ailments and instances of cancer because of Prop 65? The naswer is a resounding NO.

Don't forget to sue Mother Nature for making the air we breath cause us cancer. And allergies. Then we can sue Old Man Winter for making the snow & ice which causes us to have accidents & have to spend money on winter clothes. Better yet why don't we just go right to the source and sue God. Then all these brain dead f**kers will have won the ultimate lawsuit & shut the f**k up. Probably not though.

This group is part of PETA. Barnard sits on the board of PETA. They do this to try and trick people into becoming vegetarians or vegans. If you see any of these names don’t waste your time reading what they say.
