About to dig into pancakes but your syrup bottle is tapped? A few kitchen staples can easily satisfy your cravings.
You decided to skip cold cereal this morning and instead treat yourself to a pancake breakfast. The griddle is hot and ready, but one look in the fridge reveals that you're fresh out of syrup. But this simple homemade syrup cooks up in minutes -- and you'll never turn to store-bought bottles again.
In a saucepan, bring 1 1/2 cups brown sugar, 3/4 cup water, one tablespoon butter and a dash of salt to a boil, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and add flavoring such as almond extract, ground cinnamon or vanilla extract. Serve warm, drizzled over pancakes.
